hey everyone,

i got accepted into civil engineering at unsw..however, i am beginning to have second thoughts on whether petroleum or mining engineering might be a better profession for me in terms of the occupation demand, salary and profession.

can anyone provide any information on how, in general, the engineering programs are structured at unsw, so that i can see whether transfers are possible. e.g. transfer from civil to petroleum engineering. for example, is it true that all the different streams of engineering at unsw are the same/similar in Year 1? is it true that you decide which stream you want to enter, only after Year 1? If so, wouldn't that mean that I won't have to think about transfers and such, as the first year is common anyway?

any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks :)

AFAIK, it's only common if you do the flexible engineering course.

Mining is a very good option if you like to be in solitude for most of your life. For many, they would find this to be very boring and tedious... but ofcourse some people like it :p Civil is probably a better course (I'm biased here) because it's in high demand, the pay is decent, you don't need to move to some remote location for half your life, you can do anything from roads, waterways, bridges, buildings, geology... anything really!

or you could just do the civil/mining combined degree if they still have it (it came as an option with the civil degree last year, dunno about this year).

doesn't the flexible engineering course thingo essentially mean that everyone does the same subs in first year?? im confused about flexible engineering course.. i mean there's like a few lines on it on the unsw website, but does anyone know where i can get some detailed info on this 'flexible engineering course'?

thanks.

how come ur comparing civil with civil/mining???

i thought the whole point of flexible engineering course was that there was parity between year 1s of civil, mining, petroleum, electrical, mechanical blablabla..???
i wasn't comparing them. i was just showing you if you didn't already know, that you could do civil/mining (which looks like the better choice for you) or just civil standalone

nah didnt wanna do double degree...

um just wanted to clear my head on wot flexible engineering course was..sorry for being a pain in the arse..

so, flexible engineering course = no matter wot engineering e.g. civil, mining, petroleum, mechanical, electrical etc, u do the same courses in the first year???

Flexi-degree offers a taste in different engineering fields if you don't know which one to specialise. However you will spend an extra year making up your mind.

Your uai does not guarantee a 100% specialisation in the field you want. You have to do ok in the first year.

If you didn't opt for a flexi degree then it is a bit late. You have to do what ever you are doing and hope for a transfer after 2-3 weeks.
