What other opportunities does a pharmacist have outside community and hospital practice? Does industrial + research pharmacy involve drug production/manufacturing or anything else of interest? If so are there much prospects for these kinds of jobs? Community pharmacy seems very clerical and repetitive. Replies would be appreciated.

yeh shivi, i asked my friend (who called me like 1130 that night mind u ><)
she does pharmacology tho... and she said that in pharmacology, u get to do alot of hands on stuff like cuttin pplz up etc and see how drugs work...
as for pharmacy, i'd ask an other friend of mine... shud get bak to u with an answer soon...

pharmacy has an option to have communication with patients and reatil pharmacy is also there.. there is a lot of professional option to it..
they do the pharmacology and its more streamlined and longer to incorporate the clinical training.
pharmacy allows u to do MedSc related work in research... especially pharmacology.. (omg
one of the pharmacist from overseas and doing a PhD was HOTT... ok.. ill stop )
Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and Pathology are taught to some capacity... i cant recall how much
so u can work in anatomical sciences and physiology research too.
drug research is the obvious big thing..
Pharmacy as a course provides two advantage over the BSc in Pharmacology.
1) very competitive cohort... allowing u to further ureself.
2) registration as a pharmacist to let u work if u decide u dun lik research.. or ure older and want a repetitive career

1st yr out is an intern-like yr.. i.e. limited registration.. its why the initial pay is v.crap..

Today at the open day, this cute old tour guide teacher dude said after pre-registration, some are earning $500-600 a day. He said 'really good money' (i really had no idea what the money was like) And he said industry is crying out for graduates and there's lots of opportunities in research if you wanted to go down that path.

And; it takes you 1+ years (specific number of hours) or work to take an examination in front of a board of pharmacist to determine whether you qualify or not.sikeveo said:

Hi, I got offered for pharmacy this yr. Yay! I'm sorta thinking abt becoming a hospital pharmicist or enter the area of research, or perhaps in the pharmaceuticals industry. (lol yeah i know its too farfetched at the moment thinking abt this!) I don't really like to become a retail pharmicist or own my own pharmicist coz i don't hav much interest towards running a business.
Does anyone know the graduate opportunities for these areas? Would the pay be any better than a community pharmicist who owns their own business?
Lastly, the uni says its competitive to get into these fields. Does that mean that i need a masters degree/and bachelor with honours?

I still don't understand the differences between rural pharm and normal pharm. Since I was offered into just B pharm and not B pharm (rural), does that mean i'm limited to working in a non-rural area? Is there any way i can still enter into rural practice as a pharmicist?

Yeah it's a bit confusing ey. The rural degree has parallel subjects to the normal one (about 80%), though the other 20% has more of a focus on rural health rather than urban. The assistant dean lady said that it's sort of a form of 'specialisation', though you aren't limited to rural pharmacy ie you can work anywhere you want. And similarly, 'normal' graduates can work in both rural and urban communities (not confined). So in the end you basically come out with the same thing, though i guess if you wanted to enter rural employment and did the rural degree, you've sort of got an advantage coz you have a better understanding of the system.wongster said:

(about above) yeah, it cleared up my curiosity. I thought B Pharm (Rural) graduates are contracted to work in the country just by entering the degree (something like a rural scholarship for MBBS degree--'bonded' places)

During the rural degree, they send you to rural places for clinical placement (like 8 weeks of the year or something) while your still doing the degree. One of the guys doing rural said he was sent to Darwin! Likewise, those doing normal pharmacy are sent to urban areas. But once you're registered, you can do what you want ie not obligated to work in a certain area - which is why the ambiguity of the degrees is kinda frustratinglala2 said:
