Um i dont really understand what happened in my chem practical cause the teacher said if u add phenol indicator to magnesium carbonate dissolved in water, it will look different to phenol indicator added to magnesium oxide in water. So what will the colour of the solutions be? Cause when I did it, both turned pink-purple...

MgCO₃ + H₂O --> H₂CO₃ + MgO + H₂O --> H₂CO₃ + Mg(OH)₂. Reaction between a weak acid and strong base results in basic solution.
MgO + H₂O --> Mg(OH)₂. Basic solution.
