gng nsb is not a school to make fun of 😭 šŸ™
I know, it’s a hard school to go into and they have some of the best students in the state in terms of hsc performance (selective school after all).
Still though I was surprised to find that an exam paper from nsb had a question like this on it. Also the fact that their physics trial papers are so short (15 mc and then like 60 short answer marks pretty sure)

guys proritise actual HSC papers, rather than trial papers, if you want a band 6. Only do trial papers if you have the time

lol NSB just took past hsc questions, no original questions at all šŸ’€

Unfortunately I already did all the hsc papers 2019-2024 over the last term since our class finished the course back in mid term 2 (we had like a term and a half of nothing lol)

I'm suffering practicing the 5+ mark history/qualitative questions from trial papers

yeah I know they can be pretty boring. If you don't want to lose motivation look at VCE papers and do relevant questions related to mod 5 to 8

That’s pretty fortunate actually, good job that you did all of them!

I also recommend looking at the mc and short answer of the old syllabus questions if you’re strong on the maths.
Definitely do trial papers if you have done the hsc questions, I recommend james ruse 2020 for some harder questions (search up thsc physics).

do you mean pre 2000s? cause the pre 2019 syllabus is barely any different (same difficulty calcs)

Yeah I've been going along doing MC of most papers because although I consistently smash like up to like 14-15, I kinda fall off on the later ones like 19 & 20 which will prob be the diff between my b5 or b6

If theres no friction how tf is the block spinning? And how would slowing down the cylinder change anything?
Lets assume that someone made the block start spinning and that the before and after the speed change are 2 separate events where the block was given the same speed as the cylinder.
Then why tf did you make the cylinder spin??? The cylinder cannot physically impart any force on the block other than the normal force which does not make the block spin. If i put the box into a frictionless spinning cylinder, it is not gonna start spinning. It will behave as if the cylinder weren't spinning at all. So why mention it? Why not just have a stationary cylinder and the block is sliding around it with no energy loss??
Also if there isnt friction the sentence "The cylinder's rotation causes the object to undergo uniform circular motion" makes no physical sense?

Someone please tell me I'm completely overlooking something

Lol I could've gotten 4/4 but I forgot normal up force. HSC questions are designed to ask niche stuff.

tbh you don't need to deep it out, all that was required for full marks was saying centripetal force quadrupled, but gravity and normal force didn't change.

fk nesa bro i spent a good minute trying to comprehend what they were asking cause it couldve been some bs trick question where I go "there's no way they'll be that mean" and then the answer is nothing happens cause theres no friction or i was just overthinking it and they made a mistake. should be omitted tbh for dodgy wording making kids stop and think or interpret the question wrong. ngl under exam pressure putting down nothing happens (other than Fg=FN) might have been my first move and then what, NESA costs me 4 marks for their mistakes??

This also isn't the first time they've worded questions poorly.

If you took their word literally, you would've put R, which would've been given 0/3 marks.'

But that question is pretty retarded. I think they tried to make it seem novel lol by including "no friction and hollow cylinder", even though it was just a surface level circular motion question

Actually even if there was no friction it would still be different. Inertial frames of reference are equivalent, but that’s not inertial so you start to see some ā€œfictitiousā€ forces arise (just imagine what would happen if you were in the spinning cylinder and threw a tennis ball, it would travel in weird ways).

That being said, you’re not wrong, no effects of friction = no change in motion. Something else has to change its motion.

The only forces are gravity and normal force and the normal force provides the centripetal force. If the box also sped up then normal force would also go up.
