what the actual hell are u on about

"People were telling them that physics was this qualitative subject with lots of history and social aspects, and leaving out the analysis and the quantitative calculations."

"I think the idea previously was if we cut out the maths, the girls will like it more, but funnily enough that's not the case," she said.

"I think it's an insult to women to say we'll dumb it down and then they'll like it more."

I semi-agree with what you’re saying. There’s not enough calculations and application questions and too much emphasis on memorising, but I don’t think taking out all the history and stuff would be good either. For example, the nature of light module is actually very interesting and gets to the centre of what Phsyics actually is. It’s a good mix of understanding and calculations, especially since it seems to move smoothly on from electromagnetism in the previous module. Module 8 on the other hand is horrible.

Yr11 Phsyics was too calculations heavy in my opinion.

They need to balance it a tiny bit more I think.

year 11 physics is what uni 1st year introductory physics is closer to. in uni 95% of questions asked in physics are quantitative. there are also no qualitative "history and social impacts" questions unlike the hsc.

this is one of those moments when i cant tell if cool cat is ragebaiting anymore bc im somehow in complete agreement lmao
i do understand that we need knowledge of models and how theyve evolved through time but idk if all the 9 markers on remembering what feels like case studies are that necessary.. i picked a science over a humanities subject for a reason

Yeh I get that but uni is different to hsc. Like they can’t straight away tell us that light exhibits wave-particle duality and expect us to believe it. It makes sense why they go through the experiments and the process of actually discovering that.

And it also makes sense why yr 11 physics is similar to introductory Phsyics in uni. Cause it’s an introduction. So we know the basics. How to use the basic equations and stuff. After that you can’t use equations without knowing what they’re for and how we got there.

And yes the hsc questions expecting us to recall models and experiments word for word are ineffective, but they still need to test if we learnt the content or not somehow.

I checked the vce 2024 physics exam, there are only 6 out of 120 marks of history questions. Meanwhile we get 20 out of 100 marks worth of history questions.... along with that, most of the vce questions are quantitative (calculations), meanwhile most our questions are qualitative (so much writing)

im pretty sure vce covers the exact same content as us, its just that theirs is examined in a more conventional and proper way (emphasis on quantitative questions)

these questions screwed me over since they were marked very unfairly compared to the non history qualitative questions

this is very true, but surely they could only test us on the final theory? i mean, to be completely honestly i get confused sometimes with which model they want me to refer to and how i talk about light bc i KNOW now that it's not just a particle or just a wave ykwim so i feel weird ignoring wave particle duality. same goes for electrons etc

honestly if you want really hard questions you should probably do some like chinese papers (Gaokao) or like indian papers from (JEE) that shit is crazy and hsc is basically nothing compared to them.

According to my parents, the questions they ask in physics gaokao is complete bullshitery and difficult for the sake of being difficult but like I'm very curious how coolcat will do in the paper lmao. Also I think there will be quite alot of mod 6 questions.
