Wee... been playing piano for about 10 years now.

Finished 8th grade last year and I'm doing AMus next year.

Learning:
-Bach P&F No 9 in E, Bk II
-Beethoven Sonata in F minor Op2 No1
-Tchaikovsky October
-Debussy Passepied

Good thing is there are no scales, yay!

I'm also learning some other songs like Mika and Billy Elliot.

And if anyone wants digital sheet music, I have about 2GB worth (mostly classical).

whats the best way to start???? any tips?
I'm not sure the "approved" best way to learn but I think it is best to learn chords and melody line first. The fake book kind of stuff. Once you have learnt this, you can then go onto learning stuff like sonatas and preludes and fugues.

But if you know chords and melody line, you can pretty much look at any fake book and play heaps of songs.

Ooh I started learning the Debussy Passipied a while ago. I gave up after about 2.5 months, because, for some reason, the left hand stacatto passages were not sticking in my mind.

Hope you have a better time with it than I did ;)

Yes, it does matter. You are never going to get the same mark playing Fur Elise perfectly as someone who plays a Chopin etude perfectly. Its music, they have to consider technical ability.

Have fun doing music!!

and passion i.e. you feel the music and move with it.

Anyone can play music, but it takes your own style to make it shine and to make it unique to you.

Hey,

I've been playing piano since I was around...7 or so, started lessons when I was 8. I'm working towards achieving my Amus for piano now, I'll be doing the exam in April 09!!! Excited.

Right now I just finished year 11 and have started preparing pieces for the end of term.

Rainforest Toccata - Wendy Hiscocks - Which is very beautiful.
Etretat (from seven pieces after Monet) - Philip Wilcher. Philip is actually a friend of mine; not only an exceptional musician, but extremely generous.

Anyway. I'm doing composition for Music Extension. I've almost finished one of my pieces.

I hope I haven't over-talked! haha. I tend to do that, especially in emails. :)

I play piano too, but I haven't done so in a looong time (since year 9).

I could play a lot of songs back then (but I'm not sure if I still can...). Some of them included classics like Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise and The Entertainer. I once played a piano arrangement of The Logical Song by Supertramp, that was quite good.

But music theory will always be my stronger point (I wasn't that great at performance). I can still transcribe melodies, read and write music.

hmm. The score preview on her website looks rather interesting.

Well aren't you lucky.

Have a good time with music :).

Since I was like, 4... I'm 19 now.

I play mostly anything I like. I love Jazz and Blues for the freedom of improv.

I'm not doing music in high school but I learn piano on my own.
I've been playing for 4 yrs and I can play the following:
Grande Valse Brillante by Chopin
Waltz in C sharp minor by Chopin
Minute waltz by Chopin
Minuet by JS Bach
The Entertainer by Joplin
I'm currently trying to learn both of the Rach 3 cadenzas

Is it possible to play Rach 3 in the HSC????????????

Reviving this thread! xD
Okay, I've played for 7 years.
It's been 2 years since I finished 8th grade, I have unfortunately betrayed my classical upbringings - I play far too much soundtracks/new age/occasional good pop/rock songs.
However, for classical music, I like baroque the best - I don't have the emotions for romantic =|

Currently learning:
- Joe Hisashi: One Summer's Day
- Castlevania: Bloody Tears
- Chopin: Valse op.64 no.2

In need of advice
Currently starting the HSC course with the first music assessment being of musicology.
TOPIC: An instrument (piano) and its repertoire

I'm thinking along the lines of romanticism/impressionism and the use of expressive techniques within that era.
Any suggestions for a viva voce "question"?

What composers would be best to focus on? Chopin? Rachmaninoff? how could i approach this assessment? HELP!

It's been nearly 8 years of playing piano for me :p
Eh I don't really have a repertoire since I'm starting AMusA ;-;
Buuut I like slow, soft and calm songs like Tchaikovsky's October-Autumn Song (Currently learning it. It's so nice to listen to!)

@Joanne_45
It probably won't help you if I say this, but romanticism seems like a good option :D Chopin is a cool guy, and so is Rachmaninoff
Just ask your teacher at school?
