I'm doing my PIP on freedom of Aus. adolescents and rites of passage, but i don't know what cross-cultural component to use. Any ideas?!
Thanks.

How about time? Is freedom in your generation differ to those from your parents? What about gender? Is freedom differ between you and those of your opposite sex?

You can also try ethnicity/religion/beliefs as your cross cultural component. For example, Bar/Bat Mitzvah is performed once a Jewish adolescent reaches a certain age. I can't remember off the top of my head but it may have been 16.

I think you should also try and define "freedom". What I mean by this is: to what extent do you consider it to be "freedom"? For example, when an Australian adolescent reaches 18, going by law and legal stuff, is this the age which you think "freedom" starts?

You can compare different culture/religious beliefs (eg. Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. etc.) within the Australian adolescent community and see which culture/religion allows the earliest/latest freedom and at which stage, during adolescence, they perform a rite-of-passage. You can also blend 'gender' within this, as S39 mentioned above.

i think time or gender would be the best options.

time might be a bit harder to research and would revolve around some good primary research while gender would open you up to explore more concepts such as socialisation (meaning u can also draw from some of the theorists u studied in the prelim course)

although your focus is on adolescent rites of passage in terms of their social liberties i think an aspect to take into account is education; because even though while we're young it seems a prison it is our rite of passge to presumably greater things. just a though - but deffinately a generational cross component is always going to easily suit your topic
