What's really the definition of plagiarism in terms of english?

I have written a creative writing response but in my writing I never copied and pasted anything. But I did get some tips on how to get my story along from some good essays.

So for example:

I made a story that has a pretty similar theme to the one that I used as an example. Would it be considered plagiarism? The story is not similar at all but the way it flows is similar.

you are allowed to draw inspiration from other stories/sources.

for example, one of my stories is heavily influenced by 1984. explores things differently, but is similar nonetheless.
