The access control will require you to enter the wireless NIC's MAC address into the access list. Any devices not on that MAC address list won't be able to get onto the network. You should also disable the broadcasting of your SSID (advertising your network).

For WEP, the router should have some way for you to select an encryption strength (64/128bit) and generate a passphrase. You need to enter the same passphrase into the wireless NIC's connection settings.

I must disagree, it makes it a little more annoying to connect new users to your network and only makes your network safe against the casual browser.

popular war driving programs can dectect hidden nodes.

But if we but it that way, very few wireless networks can ever be secure. As far as the home user is concerned, that is really all they can do. It is better than broadcasting it afterall :)
