people will be people, regardless of what the event is.

I just hate how Howard was arguing that it's to be expected at any large event, and then compared it to New Years Eve. NYE is a drunken party, Anzac Day is a memorial service. Huge difference. And it's not to be bloody expected. How much effort does it really take to hang onto your rubbish for a couple of hours?

It is disgraceful, and i've seen photo's of beer bottles lined up around graves...
IMO however, why wasn't there anyone there to clean up afterwards?
Sure - They shouldn't have left the mess etc, but why wasn't anyone hired to clean it up?!

its hard to believe that no one was hired to clean it up. that would be just plain stupid.

Exactly, seems to me that this was a government job and he's not mad at the visitors because if he was, eventually the attentions going to come around to him. "Hey? Weren't you supposed to like... pay someone to clean up? ROFL!"

Unless it was organised by the RSL?

it was organised by the department of veterans affiars, who also ordered they play pop music such as the bee gees to keep the crowd amused.

I believe that the mess and tone of the event (turning it into a spectactle of thanks rather than a solemn commemoration) and the actions of the attendess are all despicable.

Heh supposedly the entire event is largely a piss-up for many younger Australians, and they only sober up for the actual service.

I'm with Howard on this, though more could to done to limit the mess given the ever-increasing number of 'pilgrims'. Still, I doubt that we Australians are as clean/aware of our obligations as the NSW RSL President believes, so the mess is to be expected, but that isn't to say that it should be accepted.
