Police clearly had exhausted all their options. They had somebody with a knife running towards them shouting "I'm going to kill you". Spray and warning shots were not effective. The alternative was a dead police officer. They should be able to defend themselves.

Does highlight the need for Tasers. Police should be given the tools necessary to broaden their options.

police are not necessarily trained to kill, they are trained to defend.
Police are trained to always use there gun as a last resort when the only other option is possibly death to themselves by another person.

The parents talk about anger at the police but look at the other side, the police that shot the boy have to live with that everyday of there lives dealing with what has happened. and what they did.

I personally believe that it was justifiable under the circumstances presented and that we have little right to judge the police harshly in such a delicate matter as this.

In response to someone else, yes it is true there are 'bad' police who are corrupt, but there are also the 'good' police who are here to protect and defend the lives of others.

Yeah, I meant life.

Measure yourself and see how much more area there is to hit on the chest rather than the leg or the arm. Now factor into the equation that the legs are moving back and forth at about 2-3 swings/sec if he was running or 0.5-1 swings/sec if he was walking towards. That is not a good chance of hitting it in such a situation factoring in nerves, etc.

Why wouldn't it slow him down? Well, one may assume that spraying someone in the face with capscium spray would too but, apparently, it didn't. Why take that risk that he just keeps moving towards you and then you're stabbed?

He hasn't been convicted of any of these things. The only thing we can safely say he is guilty of is shoplifting.

Plenty of cops have done much worse things than this.

The point is that cops are no more likely to be good, honest people than anyone else. Yet they are accorded more rights and powers, which often leads to abuse.
