Hi, can anyone help me out with this? Scenario:

5th - 88 (internal) and 90 (external exam)
1st - 92 (internal) and 91 (external exam)

If 5th is internally 4 marks behind 1st, yet only 1 mark behind them in the external...
does 5th receive, for their moderated internal assessment, 87 (highest external being 91, minus 4)?
So their hsc mark would be (87+90) divided by 2 = 89? Does this mean that 5th would have to receive 92 in the external to get a band 6 overall (87+92/2 = 90)?

That will entirely depends on how well your cohort performs in the HSC, especially between the top 5 positions. For example, if your cohort did very well and the top 5 external marks ranges from 91 (highest, one of this) to 90 (4 of this), then it is likely that 2nd-5th ranked students will all get about 90 for their internal marks (note that there will be a slight difference between the four "90" internal marks, because BOS take into account decimals, though this will not be reported to you. So the 2nd rank may gets 90.4, then 3rd gets 90.2, 4th gets 89.8, and 5th gets 89.6) - all will be reported as 90. In this case, you would have gotten a band 6 already with an external mark of 90 (plus your internal of 89.6). (Final HSC mark = average of 90 and 89.6 = 90)

If your cohort did badly e.g. highest exam mark being 91, second highest being 90, then third being say 85, then 83, then 80, because you are ranked fifth, you will be most likely be obtaining an internal mark of about 80, not 90 (obtaining roughly the fifth best external mark as your internal mark). Final HSC mark = average of 80 and 90 = 85.

In this case, you would need to score 100 in your external in order to score a final Band 6 HSC mark.
