Hello there dears.
I am doing ex2 in 2007 and the time has come of us to start deciding what we're going to do. Project proposals are due and all that jazz.

I am planning on writing a play script (stage play) something along the lines of the "Theatre of the Absurd" stuff. I have read a little of it and in my travels I came across something called "Post-absurdism". Haven't been able to find much else on it and it is something I'd like to persue. A lot like absurdist stuff, but not as pessemistic (scuse the spelling) and depressing. Absurdist literature, a lot of it anyway, is really funny and really weird, but the underlying themes that life is depressing and absurd (thus, pointless). For what I want to write about I want something a little more lighthearted and more optimistic, so when I came across post absurdism it seemed more appropriate.

The problem however, is that there doesn't seem to be as much stuff online about post-absurdism as there is on "theatre of the absurd" and general absurdist literatre (eg waiting for Godot - Samel Beckett.).

so, this is where I turn to you lovely people for help.
anyone know anything at all about post-absurdism? anyone know any good links? anybody done something like it before?

or is this a topic which is so new that there isn't much writing on it actually in existence yet?

anywho,
any help would be very much appreciated.
thanks,
Lauren

I gather that post-absurdism is a new movement within theatre?

In which case, you'll be hard pressed to find information for this on the intranet as it mostly consists of popular culture/sociology articles (i did a bit of feminist discourse theory when i did ee2) and caters to the lowest common denominator most of the times :p

I suggest you visit the Sydney Theatre Company (or whatever that organisation is called) and maybe correspond by email with uni academics who specialise in theatre and playwrighting. Start with universities in sydney as, if you're lucky you could even arrange a face-to-face meeting on their lunch break and then move onto other nsw and australian unis because i find that people are friendlier over here.

British and American unis might be ok too but don't count on it :p

May I just advise that you don't bug the Sydney Theatre Company :/

I'm more in touch with SDC next door (Sydney Dance Company) but generally, both companies are there to do their thing. Whilst it's not unlikely that they've done tertiary studies, most of the professionals are either in the cafe trying to have a quiet lunch in between gigs, or don't want to be disturbed (bear in mind most of the STC actors are VERY high calibre, Cate Blanchett et al...). Normally I am all for talking to whoever you need to in order to get the information you need, but people like these (I doubt the secretary/box office staff could really talk about post-absurdism to you) get bugged way too often anyway... I would just leave them alone :)

In terms of Unis, I don't know much about post-absurdism but if it IS theatre-related then UNSW is your best bet, seeing that it is affiliated with NIDA. Don't search for things on the internet - look for books!

wow, thankyou so much for replying so quickly.

I plan to scour every theatre book I can get my hands on and get in touch with one of the unis. Thankyou very much for your suggestions. :)
