Postgraduate in Commerce or Law!?! (1 Viewer)

So I've been looking at the Masters of Commerce in Business Law... but I also saw that there is now a Juris Doctor degree...

A firm knowledge of intellectual property and contracts law is important in the industry I'm working in. I want to have this knowledge to give me a competitive advantage... I don't want to be a lawyer at the moment, but I may want to in the future, or atleast be able to give industry legal advice.

I'm just looking for a bit of advice... do I do the business degree with a law specialisation or should I just jump straight into a law degree. Are there many people studying law who don't want to be lawyers? (sounds silly I know).

I'm currently doing B commerce and plan to do a Juris Doctor after it. Like you I don't want to be a lawyer any time soon. I've spoken to a cousin of mine who's worked her way up in the business world and she highly recommended I do law to accompany commerce. She said that it's people with sound knowledge in both business and law who get the top jobs.

However, a masters in business law sounds good too though because it'd give you the legal knowledge for your particular industry which is really all you need....

Overall I think it'd be safer to go with the Commerce + Juris Doctor especially since you mentioned you may want to be a lawyer in future
