Poverty and inequality are largely being driven by forces beyond the control of the world's poorest countries.

Why is this so?

Agreed. If that's a real exam question, then as an economist im shocked. As a student, i'd be peeved.

Yeah, IS this a real question? Probably the guy who set it came from Sri Lanka or Ethipoia...

No, the exact question is, "Discuss this statement."

I just wanted to know the meaning of that statement and how are poverty and inequality being driven by forces. Thanks.

Poverty is a relative term. It cannot be defined in an absolute.

What i mean by absolute is that UN defines the minimum income to maintain survival is $1 a day. However, it is biased because of exchange rate, purchasing power parity and cost of living.

Haha. i did a uni essay on this.

Inequality should be in a reflection of lorenz curve.
