Hi everyone,

I've just been given the following assignment...

Investigate TWO innovations in finishing techniques to determine their impact on fabric performance.

Finishes to choose from include:

Heat-setting
Water repellent finishes
Flame retardant finishes
Moth proofing
Anti-static finishes
Stain/Soil resistant finishes

1. Outline -
• the purpose of the finishing technique
• the method of application
• the machinery or technology used, and
• how the finish enhances the original fabrics performance

2. Give some examples of end-uses of this process.

3. Of what value to the consumer is the finish?

and was wondering if anyone had any information relating to this. Any info would be very helpful as i cant find much of anything.

Flame Retardant Finishes
Proban®

1.

« PROBAN® is a flame retardant solution. It was developed to give cotton and cotton rich fabrics reliable flame retardant properties that meet industry fire regulations. The PROBAN® process is usually applied to bulk fabrics before they are made into garments, furnishings etc. The process is equally successful when applied to woven or knitted fabrics which may have a wide variety of weights and constructions.

« Method of Application

The PROBAN® process involves chemical impregnation. Drying and curing with ammonia gas followed by oxidation and finally neutralisation.



1. The molecules are sufficiently small and linear to penetrate the internal areas of the cotton fibre. (Some chemical will be present in the spaces between the fibres.)
2. Drying removes any excess moisture and prepares the fabric for curing.
3. The dried fabric is cured with ammonia gas. This causes the small molecules to cross link and form a polymer. The polymer is then physically trapped and fixed in the core of each fibre.
4. A final oxidation and neutralisation treatment completes polymer fixation and removes any residual by-products.

— PROBAN® flame retardant properties will not be deteriorate for the life of the garment as long as the correct care instructions are followed.

Stain/Soil Resistant Finishes
Teflon®

1.

« DuPont™ Teflon® fabric protector is an innovation in stain protection. It provides an invisible molecular barrier around the individual fibres of fabrics. Liquid spills bead up and roll off, and ground-in stains are released during cleaning.

NOTE: Teflon is the registered trade name of the plastic material polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

There are six versions of Teflon® now available.


« Method of Application

Dispersion polymerization

Polymerization of PTFE by the dispersion method leads to either fine powder or a paste-like substance, which is used for coatings and finishes.
  • TFE is introduced into a water-filled reactor along with the initiating chemical.
  • Instead of being vigorously shaken, as in the suspension process, the reaction chamber is only agitated gently.
  • The PTFE forms into tiny beads. Some of the water is removed, by filtering or by adding chemicals which cause the PTFE beads to settle.
  • The result is a milky substance called PTFE dispersion. It can be used as a liquid, especially in applications like fabric finishes. Here is can be spread on as a paste or sprayed onto the fabric as a liquid.

— Stains are easily removed by hand as liquid stains bead up and roll off the fabric.
— Fabrics show reduced greying after repeated laundering.
— Fabrics look newer for longer.
