Re: Area of Study practice essay questions

Belonging relies on both conformity and individuality. What is your view? Compose a persuasive response with reference to the prescribed text and 2 other related texts of your own choosing.

You will be assessed on:
- Understanding of the concept of belonging.
- Using language appropriate to audience, purpose and context.
- Having an in depth analysis of textual themes, techniques and contexts.

(15 marks)

The above is purely made up.

Hints: it's all about techniques, audience: BOS markers (academics), purpose: to discuss/argue/persuade/convince, context: formal language, where do you stand? conformity? individuality? both? none? etc, provide why/how (reasons, techniques) to support opinions/ideas, be succinct, intergrate thesis into response i.e. what are thoughts in relation to belonging?/how do these relate to the statement within the question?

You have 1 hour to compose this. You can use the copies of related texts you have. - Just to be a bit nicer than the HSC exam.

Other questions:
- Belonging to a certain entity is the result of a particular identity. Discuss. As above, etc.
- Belonging is dynamic, process driven and complex. Using the concepts of journeys and change, create an argument which synthesises the three concepts mentioned above. As above etc.
- Belonging can be self-fulfilling and self-destructive. Explain the relevance of this statement with close reference to the texts you have studied.

The questions are a bit shabby but it's a start.

Re: Area of Study practice essay questions

Here's a creative response question:

"He is the eternal alien, the outsider." --- Use this as the key idea for a narrative on the concept of belonging.

Essay Topics

I have been unable to obtain any essay topics relating to the new AOS belonging; from either my school or the internet. I am keen to write some practice essays in the coming months and am curious as to what topics other people have been given/found.

The topic of our first assessment was: Belonging is an instictvie human need in all of us.

Thanks in advance.

With your topic, I suggest you be specific and create a thesis statement which is related but not identical to the topic.

E.g. While belonging remains an essential human need, instincts can be abandoned due to the strong external influences of society. This results in belonging in a way which meets normative expectations and deserts personal ideology.

So the thesis in this case could be: "Belonging is construct controlled by society."

"Our desire to belong is universal, but expresses itself in different ways." You must evaluate which one out of your core text and two prescribed texts best explores this idea.

Our first assessment question was:

"In our quest to belong we will experience both opportunities and disappointments."

Is this your observation in the texts you studied?

How are perceptions of belonging shaped by personal, cultural, historical and social contexts?

You can use the syllabus itself to come up with some more questions:

Perceptions and ideas of belonging, or of not belonging, vary. These perceptions are shaped within personal, cultural, historical and social contexts. A sense of belonging can emerge from the
connections made with people, places, groups, communities and the larger world. Within this Area of Study, students may consider aspects of belonging in terms of experiences and notions of identity, relationships, acceptance and understanding.

Texts explore many aspects of belonging, including the potential of the individual to enrich or
challenge a community or group. They may reflect the way attitudes to belonging are modified over time. Texts may also represent choices not to belong, or barriers which prevent belonging.
Perceptions and ideas of belonging in texts can be constructed through a variety of language modes, forms, features and structures. In engaging with the text, a responder may experience and understand the possibilities presented by a sense of belonging to, or exclusion from the text and the world it represents. This engagement may be influenced by the different ways perspectives are given voice in or are absent from a text.

In their responses and compositions students examine, question, and reflect and speculate on:

• how the concept of belonging is conveyed through the representations of people, relationships, ideas, places, events, and societies that they encounter in the prescribed text and texts of their own choosing related to the Area of Study
• assumptions underlying various representations of the concept of belonging
• how the composer’s choice of language modes, forms, features and structures shapes and is shaped by a sense of belonging
• their own experiences of belonging, in a variety of contexts
• the ways in which they perceive the world through texts
• the ways in which exploring the concept and significance of belonging may broaden and deepen their understanding of themselves and their world.
