Thanks cherry. I'd rep you if I could.
It's just that law is the only course not increased, and I cant imagine a fall in anu law applications if everythng else has increased demand...it does appear to be the flavour of the month

I guess the stereotypes of old-school Sydney law schools and the lure of high-profile Sydney firms are never going to change...plus the BOS "Canberra is a hole" drive might have worked...

Hey guys. I'm just having a bit of trouble here...

I'm thinking of doin' Commerce at ANU in Canberra, 'cos my ENTER wasn't high enough to do it here but the ENTER to get into commerce there is a bit contradictory from the two things i've seen. I got 80.45 btw.

The UAC says the clearly in mark for commerce is 80. This is one their web-site when you search here! but on the ANU site is says the entry requirement is 85 here!

So not sure if I should apply!!!! If you guys could help it would be rad! cheers.

The UAI for commerce was 85 last year - I have no idea how this translates to ENTER/VTAC/etc

hey, deciding to chime in even though i technically don't need to be worrying about this for a little while. My only concern about going to anu is it's 'hole' reputation and there being nothing to do, which would be rather unfortunate. i think someone's organising a roadtrip down to canberra next term to check out the campus, question:will that put me off or make me wanna go even more?

I spoke with an advisor from the Law School yesterday and she said that applications for ANU had risen 25% (particularly in law). She also said that the UAI's generally will increase from last year.

She expects the UAI for combined law in 2006 to go up above 96, possibly 97.

Hope that helps... and hope no one's had a cardiac arrest over that little piece of info.

It does depend on what you're into however Canberra is generally speaking NOT a hole - and this is coming from a convert to 'canberran-ism'. You will be a uni-student and thus 'things-to-do' largely consists of socialising with your fellows and for that you're in luck as ANU is a large uni, and UC isn't exactly small. There's lots of uni students around for you to socialise with and because of the numbers involved there's lots of things uni students like to do.

Because of the huge uni student population there is a very active night-life in civic (canberra city). Because its the national capital there's lots of 'national' events. Because the ACT govt is loaded with NSW/VIC GST and people want things to do there's lots of festivals, cultural events etc etc. If you're a commie you can march in protests at parliament etc etc. Lots of live music of varying sorts.

Socially/to-do I don't think the ANU is exactly a step down on Sydney. And it has the space advantage - you will live an easy walk/cycle and a cheap taxi from everything going on in the inner north (centre of canberra) and an easy/cheap bus from everywhere else.

I must get back to HSC study in that case.

Yeah, Law UAI at ANU was 96.50 for 2006.

Owchies.

Incidentally, you are in the middle of the degree I want to do. I'm hoping to major in German and politics in an Arts/Law combo. How is the German program at ANU?

thought i'd butt in here, as a first year arts/law student doing german. i took a year off between school and uni, so my german skills dropped dramatically coz i was lazy and didn't practise... and i'm doing continuers (2nd year) and it's been good. i've known the majority of stuff but where as when i was at school they just told us 'this is how it is' the uni course teaches you WHY you need all the different cases and those sorts of things.
there has been a pretty heavy emphasis on written german tho, and not much oral skill developement.... bit of a downside for ya.
good luck!
