Hey all,

Does anyone know when the Premier's Award ceremony is happening? My parents are more excited about this than I am, so they are refusing to book/plan their holidays until they know when the date is...so they are driving me nuts! Does anyone have an idea when its on? Late January? They are getting more stressed about it than I am! Jeez, asian parents...;)

Thanks!

it involves alot of wating in a line
Isn't kind of tiresome (for both the audience and Bob Carr) to present 900+ awards? Shouldn't they make the criteria for getting a Premier's Award more stringent? (e.g. 47+ in 10 units or something similar)

Or maybe instead of having 90+ in 10units, you need the overall average mark of >90. I'm sure a lot of people scraped in with most of their subs in low 90s. It sucks for someone who got all high 90's and then one high 80 and misses out.
That is an awesome idea!

Thats higher than the criteria used to pick the top 500 students in Australia. To get into top 500 they chose you by whoever got 93+ in 10 units

Maybe they could do something really sensible and use UAI as the indicator. That's always going to be a much fairer ranking system. Perhaps people who get over 99 should get the award?

I suppose that'll never happen though now with all the secrecy surrounding uai's.

The whole over 90 in 10 or more units is a pretty crazy way to do it. It's easier to get band 6 in some subjects than others, so some people with lower uai's get the premier's award, because their subjects were mostly low scaling, while others with higher uai's miss out because they did higher scaling subjects or had just one "bad" subject.

Top 500 students in Australia?
I never knew they had that...so if you got 93+ in 10 units, you're considered one of the top 500 in Australia??? That'd be a nice title :)

Well that was last years criteria, who knows about this year. If it stays the same i miss out by 1 mark because i got 46/50 (92%) in one unit.

Yes i agree with you. It's too broad to just say band6 in 10 units when there are varying degrees of difficulty of courses students take.

Perhaps over 99 is more fair, because here at least there is the honour of coming top 1% in the state. Alas.
Even then it wouldnt solve the student number, you'd still have 600-700 odd students. I think most people with 10 or more units of band 6 would be pretty close to 99 anyways

then you can just change the cut-off, make it 99.50 for instance.

at least with UAI, the number of students receiving the award is kept constant. it starts to devalue it a bit when the number of students getting it goes up and up.

The whole Premier's award thing is really quite pointless. UAIs can't be used in that sort of calculation because it means publicising a lot of UAIs en masse which then creates a lot of problems with league tables etc etc.

When you think about it - the Premier's award doesn't really mean anything. The marks are all that matter so why bother changing it?

Oh btw - I got 90+ in 12 units so i'm not just bitching cause i missed out :p

it used to be much more difficult to get the award with the old HSC. Before, when students were marked to a bell curve it was an amazing achievement to get over 90 in 10 or more units, I remember my sister got the award in the last year of the old HSC and only around 60-70 students got it

UAI's are confidential - so the govt couldn't just go announce that you got over 99, i think thats why they base it on hsc marks.
but don;t worry, everyone knows the premier's list is bs anyway...no offense to anyone, but if u did agriculture, d&t, legal studies, standard english and general maths and got over 90 in all of them, i don;t think you should be on the same list as someone who did 4u english, 4u maths, physics, chemistry and Latin or something and probably beat you by 15 uai points.

I hope we get to speak to bob carr, cause i'm gonna ask him if the number of premier list students goes up ever 2 fold ever year because
a) we are just all getting smarter
b) his gallant roll as premier has made all our teachers better
c) He's made the hsc so bloody criteria based and spoonfed, that anyone can learn shit off by heart and do well.

gee, i wonder wat he'll say

I guess the answer's b then?

Although, he'd also like to throw in some stuff about how NSW has a world class education system, how the world can learn from NSW, that students are now being taught better, how the rest of the world looks to NSW for guidance and some other rubbish.
