Do you guys even pre-purchase a ticket, or is it free? I've just been walking in and the driver doesn't care lol. Is that normal? xD

Don't do that next week during Semester.
For O-Week it's suppose to be free but they have dippers. When uni starts you have to purchase it but some people walk past the dippers and hop onto the bus like they already dipped their tickets. The drivers assume they already dipped.
Sometimes the dippers won't be there and so you have to dip on the bus. If you don't have a ticket then, you will be told to get off.
