Is this when soldier are in groups and the back group fires, runs ahead, the second last group fires then runs ahead etc?
If not, what is it, and when was it used? Which significant battles failed?

They used it famously at the Somme (as well as others).

It was the 7 days of artillery fire designed to absolutely obliterate the German trenches before the British/French soldiers went over the top to the German trenches.

lol and we all know how the somme turned out, this is rather innefective and using the somme as a good example lol. the english lost upto 600,000 men whilst the germans sat 10-15m underground and slept through the artilery fire. anyways its correct in that it was used lol
