I need help with this one,

i have chosen B Applied finance and economics

and i dont really understand the credit system

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/programofstudy.php?edition=2005&code=FNN04

lemme try to understand this,

In my first year of study I must do:

FIN310

Two from part a and two from part b

ECON309

ECON311

and finally two from the 300+ units (apart from the ones already mentioned, see link below)

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?
edition=2005&ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=ECON

so is this right?

kindof, except you wont do them in your first year(s) of study. typically 100 level units are done in 1st year, 200 level units are done in 2nd year and so on. you will spend your time in 1st and 2nd year making sure you meet the prerequisites for those units. you have to work these out yourself by looking at the unit listings in the handbook or asking an academic advisor or asking here.

basically to complete your degree you need to meet the requirements as specified. you have up to 10 years (i think) to do this, you can do it in any order you want, but pre-requisite requirements will tend to dominate the choices you make.

the requirements for the completion of the degree of Bachelor of Applied Finance as set out in the Bachelor Degree Rules including the following approved coherent study:

FIN310 plus two units from each of the following:

(a) ECON335, ECON350, ECON360

(b) ACCG329 or ACST305, ACCG352, ACCG353, ACST300;
Thats for the completion of your degree not your first year :)

so you may have to choose electives (random subjects) to make up more credit points

this is abit confusing

what are the pre-requisites, which units 100 and 200 level courses are required to do those 300 level courses?

if u dont mind, can u guys type out an example of the program of study?

yep pre-requisites are units you have to do before, and have to get a pass (P) or above. as a side note there is a conceded pass mark (PC, score of 45-50) which means you passed the unit but cant use it as a prerequisite. its only really of use in third year when you wont need pre-reqs any more. some units also have co-requisites, which means you have to be doing the co-req units at the same time. back to the prerequisites, say you want to do ECON350. if you have a look here http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unit.php?edition=2005&vid=19805 you see its prereqs are: ECON200 or ECON201 or BBA204 or BBA214

that means you have to have done any of those units before you will be allowed to enrol in ECON350. you read the unit descriptions and decide ECON200 looks good, so you look here http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unit.php?edition=2005&vid=19790 and see you need to do ECON110 and ECON111 to be allowed entry to ECON200. when you look up ECON110 you see it doesnt have any unit prerequisites (but has some conditions, eg type of degree you are enrolled in or GPA etc), so that seems like a good place to start. so in first year you would do ECON110 and ECON111, then in second year youd have met the pre-requisites for ECON200 so you do that, then in third year you could do ECON350.

you would follow a similar procedure for all the units. you would also have to make sure you meet all the other requirements for the degree, eg X credit points at 100 level or above (that means all 100, 200, 300 level units), Y credit points and 200 level or above (all 200, 300 level etc including the ones you counted for the 100 level or above credit points), and so on.

a full program is pretty involved. when you enrol in first year you will have to get a program approved by an academic advisor. you division will probably have a typical program available or the academic advisor will help you make one on the day, so dont worry too much. its important to understand how it works though, and you can also ask here if you have questions.

Sweet_Lemon, I'd say
- (ACCG100 and ACCG101) or ACCG105
- ECON110 and ECON111
- STAT170
would be good starting points.

As for the rest, take a look at the handbook and find something you might like to do.

i'm in b. applied finance/ b. economics

basically what you should do is look at the single b. economics degree and take the core units from there. and then do the same for b. applied finance.

what should give you a list of core units for both degrees. then you would fill up the rest of your degree with electives from whatever level.

from memory, the following are core 100 level units:

econ110
econ111
econ141
acst101
accg105 (or accg100 and accg101)
stat170
COMP1xx or ISYS1xx

that would total to 21 credit points, if you only do ACCG105 instead of ACCG100+ACCG101
which means you need another 9 credit points at 100 level.

the breakdown of the degree is:
300 LEVEL = 30CP
200 LEVEL = 36CP
100 LEVEL = 30CP

of course you can choose to do less 100 level units if you make up for them with 200 and 300 level units.

good luck...

accg105 is recommended for those whos degrees aren't heavily accounting based. it covers the topics in accg100.

those who fail accg100 take up accg105 in the 2nd semester and combine that with accg101.

contact hours mean how many hours per week you will have of classes for that unit. so 3 contact hours would be maybe 2 hours of lectures PLUS 1 hour of tutorial/workshop.

i'm not sure how you go about getting an exemption from accounting from your tafe studies. i'm assuming you did accounting in tafe as part of your HSC? if so, i don't think you can apply for exemptions. but best to ask someone from student services...

tietable maker

pretend your subject is abc100, for abc100 you have a lecture, a tute and a prac. from the timetable grid you have to choose L1, T1 and P1 (it looks confusing because they list all the prac and tute times but you just need to choose one of them

for your timetable maker, for starters only put in your first semester subjects...

i'm assuming your gonna be in appfin/accg, so that would be: accg100, econ110, stat170 and ?? isys123??

once you've done that, you should pick one of each activity... a lecture, tutorial, practical/workshop is required. if it states LECTURE 1, LECTURE 2, LECTURE 3, that means there are 3 separate lectures which you must attend.....

you shouldn't get any clashes because a majority of students in the department will be doing the same combination of subjects you will be doing.

i gotta say sweetlemon, your rather keen arn't you.. the offers arn't even out and your already planning your timetable!!!

as for when you actually enrol, i'm not sure of the dates but i'm sure its on the mq site somewhere. when you receive an offer, you will have to return that offer slip to mq notifying them that you have accepted the spot and then they will give you an enrolment package with all the details.

uh i don't think anyone knows the answer to your hecs help question since this is the first year the hecs help system will be used. we're all on the old system!! :p

Subjects I did for AppFin/Accg were Accg100, Acst101, Econ110, Stat170 first sem, then Accg101, Econ111, Econ141 and Comp123 -> Isys123.

When making your timetable do as mentioned above, but the reason they don't have dates and only days is because its repeated week after week.

I don't think you can enrol the day you get your offer...probably you'd have to get a proxy to enrol for you. MQ makes you enrol on particular day according to your degree and particular timeslot according to your surname.
