It's very likely already been said, but it is not algebraicly correct to divide by zero and arrive at anything definitive in C. This is because C is an integral domain and hence does not contain any zero divisors (id est: for x*y=0, at least one of x or y is zero).

I can assure you there is no such 'flaw' in algebra. You are free to examine the structures of rings, groups, algebras and fields of course to confirm this.

it is only an error if a=b which it does in this case
but that proves you cant just devide throug by a constant/s
you dont no if it will = o or not
Interesting point. So something like this:

ab = 2a
b = 2

Is invalid?

Anyway, back on topic:
Now that we've established that 1 + 1 = 2, let us move on to 1 + 2 = 3...

People, get over the divide by zero topic. Either that or start another thread. The 1+1=2 argument is resolved. It can be proved, but will take many pages. Move on. This topic is dead.

There isn't anything necessarily wrong with that.
In that case, a can equal anything except 0. Even then, you won't be able to divide by zero, but if a = 0 then ab = 0, and 2a = 0. So if b = 2 then the statement is still correct because 2*0 = 0. In that case b could equal some other number as well. But in a lot of cases you can make statements and say as long as a != 0 it works.

eg. f(x) = 1/x
As long as x != 0 you can still do normal things to it like integrate, find its gradient etc.

i just feel like adding on:
I think 1+1 can equal to 11 (that is one one not eleven) if the base is right.
Here we can form a limiting base of some sort ô_ô call it base 'f'
1< f <2 (since if it's 2 then 1+1=10 AND it can't be base 1.. for obvious reason)
Anyone have ideas on how to do this?

1 is One. One whole Singular unit. Add one more whole singular unit, and you have two whole singular units. Omit "whole singular units" and you have your self a counting system.
Read previous posts on why this cannot be logically done.

Either forward your own proof, or go away and stop trying to tell people (when they're not bothing you) what to do.

YEAH we're really interested in working out why 1 plus 1 equals 2 here!! cant you mofos leave us allone to ponder such important things.

I frequently discuss the proof of 1+1=2 with my many exciting and attractive girlfriends, and they all get sooo turned on by it. Who needs to talk about dull things (that actually matter) like what the Federal governments doing to universities and what John Howards spending on private schools, and war in Iraq and world hunger and the danger of accidental nuclear war. Theres 1+1 to be solved, so lets get down to it.

Blunt enough?

Its just like space exploration! there are problems here on earth that need looking at, as aforesaid, but what do we do? we explore mars and Jupiter, we check the moon for traces of water!!! Studying history is infuriating when you see how much Kennedy spent on the space race, and to what end? to put a man on a rock, thats what.

Use apples then. 2 apples are 1 apple and another apple. If you can't assume the existence of those apples, where are you?

Maybe some genius will one day look at it from a linguistics point of view, and point out that the HUMAN invention of words representing numbers REQUIRES that you ASSUME the meaning of the word 'one' is the same as the meaning of the word 'one' and the meaning of 'two' is 'equal' to the meaning of 'two', thus 1=1 and 2=2.

maybe you should study english and learn to avoid starting a sentence with "Of importance is not whether or not"...

Just a suggestion.

Isn't it just the case of adding two things together produces them a double of them?

n+n=2n
2+2=4
8+8=16

Also, adding two of the same things can't give anything else

1+1=/=...-2,-1,0,2...
