Heya,

I would offer to help, but my knowledge is really limited to pop-culture. :)

Firstly, you haven't got the function for us to email you available. I suggest either putting it in your profile (go to 'User CP' on the top-left of the screen), or putting it in this thread.

About your topic: Whilst I think it is rather broad and over-studied, I think if you found an interesting focus question, it could be really great.

Try to stay away from aspects of the crisis that have been studied to death -- probably 'Why it happened' and such. Maybe focus on the public's attitude on both sides or something regarding social history and a lot of different views?

I will be willing to look over your work once it's done. :)

oh sorry, could you email any info 2 plop88@bigpond.net.au please.. :D

i dont know about the focus question atm, but im thinking along the lines of what it was, and what influenced the final result or what wouldve happneed if the americans launched the 1st missle or vicecersa, ie. nuclear war

I'm not sure but I don't think the Americans ever intended to launch a nuclear strike on Cuba. The most belligerent option would probably have been an invasion of the island, which might have been met with tactical nuclear weapons by the Soviets, or even a strategic nuclear attack on the American mainland depending on how insane Khrushchev felt like being.

In any case, I'd probably advise against doing a hypothetical alternate history for your project.

Yeah, I hate hypothetical stuff in history.

The book 'the 100 worst decisions of all time' or whatever it's called is so stupid. How do they know that the decisions weren't actually the best of all the evils?

Make sure you aren't doing JFK for your case study, we covered the CMC fairly substantially in class.
Having said that, for my project I analysed Che Guevara, and had to make sure I steered clear of the CMC in my project, although all the books I read dealt fairly heavily with it and it was really, really interesting.
I'd highly recommend it, even if it is overstudied. In fact, the best projects I've read actually dealt with the popular topics but put interesting and highly original spins on them.

Good luck :)

That's interesting... Whilst I do enjoy the topics where I've never heard of the people/events, I'd probably agree with you.

I think, to articulate it better from my experience, the better essays that I've read have been popular, but go into a different area or scope of the topic.

Actually, I would also agree with your last point.
I think the best project I ever read dealt with commy China and Mao Tze Dung (which we all know is a fairly overdone topic), but she actually analyzed how historians have dealt with the concept of "knowledge is power" with relation to prisons in China. It was just...amazing.

for a year 11 independent project i did fidel castro and went into a bit of detail about the CMC, i didnt get a v good mark though because i did like no work... and for my major work this year im doing the CIA's involvement in socialist/communist movements within south/central america during the cold war, with specific references to Guatemala (1950-5) and Chile (1970-73). Basically looking at american foreign policy and their involvement in the various Coups detat. This i guess ties in with Cuba, considering the CIA's involvement there and the ties cuba had with other socialist movements. i think it would be interesting looking into the ties cuba had with the USSR and the reasons for that, how america actually forced cuba away from them and forced them to seek support from else where.. and the extent to which america was the actual cause for the CMC in the first place. thats kinda like what i did for year 11, and if id actually tried a bit i think it could have been pretty good.

Carnivour - yah, I think it's because we know about the topic, but not that specific area, so we're comfortable with the ideas, but are still learning new things...
