Q about wireless (1 Viewer)

I'm not very computer literate.. but how do people tap into the university's wireless internet using their home laptop?

And also does anyone know when the uni library closes on weekends? (if it's even open)

Though when I tried it, I could get the little wireless icon in my tray but I couldn't browse the web, not even a MQ page...:s

mean?

And how do you know if your computer has inbuilt wireless or not? But I'm assuming since I have the cardslot it's not wireless..?

Its basically just a wireless standard, most cards should be compatible, but just make sure they are.

If in doubt, post the card model

Well.. I went to the library.. tried the wireless thing.. but "No Connection Available" appeared.. I got angry.. then used the library's computers ><

I hate lugging 5kg worth of laptop around for nothing

Oh yeah.. I also borrowed some Reserve books.. and they said I gotta return it by 9am tomorrow otherwise hourly fines ($2) apply.. I usually get to uni around 9:30am and I asked the guy and he doesn't know when the fines really start.. (eg. like carparks, usually they give you around 10mins leniency)

Ciel, I NEVER get reception in the library anymore on wireless. Its so crap, I've complained to the IT people, but never got a reply

I dont see the point in advertising wireless if the only place you get reception is outside where its freezing, there are no desks or seats and your battery runs out. Grrr! It pisses me off so much! It hinders my procrastination efforts.

It says that I have full connectivity (those little green bars are full), but there is always, as you said, "limited connectivity" which really equates to jack shit.

I hate wireless.

Um... 1-2yrs ago? I forget.. quite awhile.. it was around when the first 3.06ghz computer/laptops came out.. so it's pretty old..

And yeah, the wireless is 802.11b/g-2.4Ghz
But it still doesn't work in the @%#$&$%**%^ library!!

Really? I saw sooooo many people in the library with wireless on.. I wanted to go up to them and ask them.. but then got embarrassed cos I'll probably sound really dumb.. X] So I ended up using library's desktop in there.. The computer also had the whole series2 of Desperate Housewives on it.. too bad I didnt bring my exteral HDD hehe (even though I hardly watch tv, it'd be good to have heh)

I was able to use the Library wireless on my G4 iBook last year with no hassles. For some reason, this semester I can't. SAM building works fine.

It can see the network, and will sometimes connect but the connection lasts maybe 2 minutes before dropping out. More often than not I don't even get an IP address form the DHCP server. It could be just more computers than the AP can handle are connecting at any one time, or that an Apple airport update has broken something. Hmf. Luckily I prefer working out on the lawn anyway!
