This is how i see it.
Elements at the top of the reduction table will oxidise over sumthing at the bottom.
ie. an element at the top of the table will oxidise more easily.
ie. the element is more reactive.
since Pb oxidises (negative electrode) and X reduces (postive electrode). this means that Pb Oxidises more easily than X.
and also since Z and Y oxidise when in a cell with Pb, they are more reactive.
ie they are preferentially oxidised over Pb.
ie. they are easiER (increasing ease) to oxidise than Pb.

So the answer must be D.

INCREASING EASE OF OXIDATION...that means as you increase it gets easier to oxidise. hence the easiest to oxidise (most reactive) is last. D.

mmm... i put A as well. got the positive/negative of anode/cathode mixed up, which is really annoying, i can see how it could be D now. i hate getting multiple choice wrong, especially when i've had a post it in front of me on my desk for the last 3 months to remind me how it's meant to go. :(

omg... it's D! but i put A!! nooooooooooooooooo
oxidation occurs at the negative terminal which means Pb oxidises easier than x. So when u put it in order, Pb should be after x!

even if u look at this question in a non chemistry perspective, you'd see that (C) and (D) both start with an x, so the answer must be either one of these. but then obviously (c) is the wrong answer so it's gotta be D!

remember, oxidation occurs at the ANODE
anode means the negative terminal in a galvanic cell
hence,
Pb is more easily oxidised than x
y more easily than Pb
z more easily than Pb

then to distinguish between y and z, you need to calculate the voltages that occur.

but to save time, you could just look at all your answers, and there's only one answer that suits x < Pb < y < z, which is D.

and fucking me i wrote A, the other way around.

i thought it was d.. but yeah the whole increasing order of ease or watever thing confused me so i looked at the answers carefully and 3 of them had z as the last term.. so this confirmed what i already thought and i put d .. yay :D
