Recognition of Specialist Medical Qualifications gained overseas
In Australia the training of medical specialists, including general practitioners, is coordinated and provided on a national basis by specialist medical colleges. Specialist training follows on from the basic medical education provided by the University Medical Schools and the provisional registration (intern) year.
Doctors with specialist or general practice qualifications obtained overseas may be eligible to have their qualifications assessed for specialist recognition by the appropriate specialist medical college via the Australian Medical Council (AMC).
Eligibility criteria for specialist assessment are available from the AMC:

Doctors who meet these criteria may apply to the AMC for assessment of their qualifications by the appropriate specialist medical college.
The Specialist Recognition Advisory/Appeals Committees (SRACS) are responsible for recognising individual specialists for Medicare purposes.
The SRACs are administered by the Health Insurance Commission and are statutory bodies established under the Health Insurance Act 1973. There are six SRACs to cover the States and Territories and one appeal committee.
