you have to take a series of oral and written examinations...not only in the field of medicine but also english language proficiency.

the same goes for transferring between any two countries where the degrees are not recognised

Contact the AMA and ask them directly, usually there's a list of recognised institutions or something.

Recognition of Specialist Medical Qualifications gained overseas

In Australia the training of medical specialists, including general practitioners, is coordinated and provided on a national basis by specialist medical colleges. Specialist training follows on from the basic medical education provided by the University Medical Schools and the provisional registration (intern) year.

Doctors with specialist or general practice qualifications obtained overseas may be eligible to have their qualifications assessed for specialist recognition by the appropriate specialist medical college via the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

Eligibility criteria for specialist assessment are available from the AMC:

Australian Medical Council
PO Box 4810
KINGSTON ACT 2604
AUSTRALIA

Ph (64) (02) 6270 9777
Fax (64) (02) 6270 9799
Website http://www.amc.org.au

Doctors who meet these criteria may apply to the AMC for assessment of their qualifications by the appropriate specialist medical college.

The Specialist Recognition Advisory/Appeals Committees (SRACS) are responsible for recognising individual specialists for Medicare purposes.

The SRACs are administered by the Health Insurance Commission and are statutory bodies established under the Health Insurance Act 1973. There are six SRACs to cover the States and Territories and one appeal committee.

Further information about the SRACs is available from:

Committee Secretariat
Specialist Recognition Advisory Committees
Health Insurance Commission
PO Box 1001
TUGGERANONG ACT 2901

Phone: (02) 6214 6939 or (02) 6124 6028
hope that helps:D

i think the politics of this country will mean that your friend will find it difficult to get accredited.

hey wouldnt it be the other way around...?? at the moment, Australia has a workforce shortage of healthcare practitioners and would be willing to accept almost anyone, even if he/she has a dodgy degree from a dodgy institution.

Provided they're not jumping off a boat and enter Australia legally, Idon't see why politics would make it any more difficult for Chinese doctors to be registered in Australia.

Hi freaking_out,

We actually assist international students and immigrants. Would be happy to advise your friend. By the way Dentistry is in demand althought it is a little time consuming to complete registration, etc. I find doing a Masters would be easier for registration purposes although expensive. If I have the details, I could advise.
