question for current UWS students doing Bachelor of Arts (1 Viewer)

Okay, so i hauled my ass down to Penrith (which i have never been to in all my 21 years living in Australia), and i enrolled. I came out with hundred of papers, books, pamphlets and other assorted bits paper and the notion of reading of all of them is just too damn daunting right now. also, i doubt they will answer my question.
One of the 'advisors' at enrolment day was confused and managed to confuse me also when i tried to approach her with this question:

'hi, i'm doing a bachelor of arts this year, and i'm majoring in psychology. i was wondering what the diff is between doing a major in psychology and doing a bachelor of psychology- which is more commendable and which is more likely to get me a career as a psychologist?'

'they both get you....no dif...the other is more than it will be but not the way they thinking if you get good gpa transfer but dont think it will affect you can psychology do.'

'sorry? so, i should stick with the major or should i transfer?'

'don't think about it grade point average high and you will get into it just DO'

'do? do what?'

*frustrated sigh* 'DO it and you will get to the psychology'

'yeeeeeeeeeeeah. thanks.'

this women couldn't speak good english, and i'm not one to discriminate- both my parents speak poor english- but seriously, is this woman fit to be an ADVISOR?

can anyone help me on this? i didn't get to speak to the head of psychology- glen or something, and when i called up the infoline the guy i spoke to didn't sound so sure of himself and told me to speak to a course advisor.

if anyone is doing a bachelor of psychology at UWS- do you need to have done mathematics for your HSC? please say it isn't so........

Firstly, you don't need Maths in the HSC to do BPsych. A note about UAC pre-requisites, they are not enforceable generally. In psych you will come accross some math, so if you are hopeless with numbers, you may find it hard, but I doubt that being the case. You can also take advantage of academic preparation programmes.

As for the difference between BPsych, BA and BSoSc, the fundamental similarities are you will need to do the same units (because they are aiming for accreditation), you need to your honours and other professional accreditations. The BPsych does have certain units which are reserved for BPsych students only, so BA or BSoSc students usually can't do them (that's what I was told in Psychology 1A).

Nah I think its for all BPsych, BA and BSoSc in psych. cos for BA, if u want to a honours year u must do some Advance Statistic or whatever, so im guessing you need to take some stat units before hand if ur going to take the advance. Theres probably some intro to stat in Psychology 1A and 1B this year.

haha dont worry, ur not the only one who sucks at maths..i hate it with a passion, give me english any day!! oh well..i think alot of us arts(psych) peeps r goin to be all :S bout the stats..oh well.. we get that aye!!

A mathy part of psych would probably be when you use statistics ( prolly a statistics for science subject) I did statistics for business with no maths done in year 11/12 at all and still passed. There are statistics bridging courses you can do.

ahh thats good to hear that its not going to be superhard maths...actually its not that i cant do maths..i just really hate maths... but if its more sciency type of maths i should be fine with coping with it coz i did hsc chem and physics

basically the stats i did covered standard deviation, variance, means, modes, medians, frequency etc

so its pretty much yr 10 stats...YAY!

did you do stuff like Central limit theroem? possibilities and probability? with the unions and stuff? and conditional probability? also distributions? [stats for science] i just wnat to know ho wsimilar the unit is with stats for biz?

i am a year three psychology student, i do B art psychology, i tell u the difference bewteen these two, for one B art doesn't focus too much on maths and biology, for two B art gives u room to do other electives, where B psychology focuses too much on maths, biology and psychology electives, they are the same APS structure, for psychology students we need to reach year three, if ur mark is good then u go to year four, then u do master or two years training, but if ur mark is not good, it doesn't matter whether u do B art psychology or B psychology u don't get a chance anyway, so there is no difference at all, u need six years of study in this course to enter APS and become a registered psychologist, these course provide u the same teaching

A psychologist is not a doctor. That would be a psychiatrist.

To become a psychiatrist, you have to become a doctor first and then specialise in psychiatry after you finish. One of the differences with psychology and psychiatry is that psychologists cannot prescribe medication.
