hi there, has any one done the experiment:
The effects of dissolved Carbon dioxide on pH of water?
if so could i please have a look at your experimental plan?
Thankyou

Purpose: To discover the effect of dissolved CO2 on the pH of water
Safety audit: Take care not to drink solution - blow through straw, don't suck liquid up when breathing. < I know this sounds obvious (and funny) , but you always need a few safety audit things and this was something the teacher actually said -"blow don't suck" - lol, pretty funny class reaction when she said those words !
Be careful with solution which could become acidic, and be careful of all glassware.
Equipment: Beaker, straw, univeral indicator, water.
Procedure: 1. Fill a beaker with water. 2. Add 3 drops of universal indicator. 3. Record colour (and therefore current pH) 4. Place straw in beaker and blow air into water for 5 mins. C02 from your breathe will dissolve in solution. 5. Record final colour, and therefore any pH changes.
Data: Basically a little table with pH colour changes(green > red > orange)
Inferences from Data: Dissolved CO2 decreases the pH of water, making it more acidic.
Ways in which the reliability of this experiment could be improved:
- Use a data logger to measure precisely the pH and track changes
- Use a machine to emit pure CO2 in water, thereby eliminating all other gases carried in your breath.
