okay so my music teacher says that if you false start in the exam (like you stuff up the start so you begin again) then you are guaranteed not to get a band 6...

so a) is she right? and b) is there any penalty for starting that song again?

For any formal music concert, a stuff up at the beginning does not show a lot for the performers presentation. Bearing this in mind, a band 6 would mean you can carry out the entire song near perfection, to the marker's standards/NSW syllabus. If you are doing Music 1, it is very unlikely you will get band 6 if you make a mistake. From memory, there were only 2- 4% of the entire NSW that got a band 6 in Music1 in 2005.

Depending on the marker's (last year I had 3) they may be lenient with the marks if you start again because they know that most of the students are really nervous. If you can carry out the rest of the song at an incredible level, you may be able to acheive a high band 5. But I'd advise you not to start again, because you never know, they may not have picked up your mistake at all. Good luck.
