hey guys, well we don't have long till exams and i'm kinda shitting my pants. you see i can't study for business studies, which would explain my shit marks in the trials.

anyways i was just wondering if any1 knew the best was to study for business. there's just sooooo much content to learn i think my heads gunna explode, so if there are any techniques that could be of use please let me know

It's impossible to learn all the content. Don't worry, your not the only one!

Just try and memorise the dot points - and write keywords on each of those. If you can memorise those, you should be able to expand on each in a report or essay situation in the exam (if you've done work throughout the year). That's my strategy anyway.

Business is basically comon sense, the hardest part is name dropping the syllabus terms at the appropriate times.

Like ben says, learn the syllabus and write keywords next to each topic. The keywords should be a summary of each detail you would talk about if you were asked a question.

I also tend to make acronyms to help me remember each point of each heading. eg.
Resistance to change:
F I C S (financial, inertia, cultural, staffing)

I did the business studies in a month study guide and am feeling pretty good leading up to the exams. but then exams aren't my best strength.

but the hsc in a month guide dosnt throughly go through every aspect of the course..ive got it too..its alrite 4 cramming..but it wont go into depth and it misses out some major points outlined in the syllabus..

So very very very true!!

In Biz, the syllabus reigns supreme - its so detailed, which makes it look bad (and in some ways it is - cuz there is just a teensy bit too much to cover! ) - but in other ways, it makes studying a breeze (in relation to, say, english, where the syllabus is so vague and indecisive that its just shithouse).

If you choose to ignore the syllabus you will get MAX 50%, because the examiners and markers are looking for name-dropping.

yeah, terminology is all you have to know in business...I'd say if you practically re-wrote the syllabus, with little explinations here and there -- you'd have to get into a high band 5.

I hate some of the terminology though - I got killed in one of my trial responses that was on 'the influences of Employment relations'. "Cool" I think, "my case study has an industrial dispute and I can't think of anything else that could possibly influence employment relations than an industrial dispute!"


Appearently, according the the business studies syllabus an industrial dispute does not "influence" on ER......urgh, talk about getting picky

OMG! now im really freaking out. Coz our teacher never mentioned ANYTHING about syllabus dot points!! She only summarises everything for us and tells us to learn it. Full stop.

hey spannar, well i think the syllabus dot points that ben was talking about were the actual "dot points" on the syllabus.

you should have been given a copy of the syllubus for all five topics and underneath that it says: students learn about: blah

and then u see dot points and points under the dot points, and that is what your teacher would have summarised

By syallabus dot points I mean the stuff on the syallabus, go to the boardofstudies site for it.

I.e. Drivers of Globalisation:
Roles of TNCs
Global Consumers
Impact of Technology
Role of government
Deregulations of financial markets

The people who did well in the last section of the exam were just those who were able to "name drop" the appropriate titles of the syallabus. Case studies only need to be "mentioned/reference" and discussion of each dot point can be brief according to the standards package.

I've tried doing some section IV questions but they are impossible to do properly. E.g. one asked to talk about effective employment relations, finance strategies AND influences on a global business WITH case studies in one question!

Like the only way to do it in 35 minutes is by listing the syallabus and writing like one sentance on each! It's so stupid!

Anyway - I'm hoping section IV will NOT be on global business and that Section III is.

ok i'm rewriting notes but following the syllabus. is it ok if i only memorise the stuff that's in the syllabus.

for example:

"types of markets - resource, industrial, intermediate, consumer, mass, niche."

do i just study them in general? or go deeper into them such as in niche markets --> micromarketing (explanation) & mass customisation(explanation)?

or do i just go "niche market is blah" and then just mention micromarketing or mass customisation according to the question?

well I think your going way-way-way into too much detail.

actually, I'm saying that because i've never heard of micromarketing and mass customisation. I probably know what they are from DT, but with different jargon.

I say, you notes should say

niche = specialisation e.g. jewellery

and in response to natstar, no section IV doesn't have to be on global! for some reason most of the trials based it on global because the spec and 2001hsc had it on global. the only reason the bos kept global in both was so they wouldn't be slaughtered too much for introducing the term "case study" into section IV for the hsc.

however, it seems that it's likely it might be global again, but technically it can be any combination of topics NOT used in section III. so i've dying for section IV not to be on global, so the rest of the state can get a shock ;-)

section IV HAS to be on global.....pleez, pleez, pleez.....we talked about it in class on the last day of skl and our business teacher told us it will be global cuz the new HSC is still too new for them to change it too dramatically...blah, blah, blah and so she told us to only concentrate our studies on our global case study....OMG, it had betta not be anything but global or im suing!! Why do i find this out now, like 5 dayz b4 the exam??!....grrr..... but surely if we do know the syllabus (as ppl have said) we can just mention marketing or ER terms (eg- Brambles uses an intensive distribution strategy to reach a large customer base) that will be sufficient? I'm good at spinning sh!t, so as you's say, if we do get in hassles, just use syllabus terms and relte it to your case study (SOMEHOW!!) AAAHHH-- i just want it to be ova!!!

My teacher thinks it won't be on global because otherwise people will just presume it will defintely be global next year - hence if they change it then people will complain...

Yes "with reference to a case study" means "mention it" ... so I am pretty sure "BOS Design uses individual contracts to allow for greater flexibility" is allowable.... (I hope or I am screwed)

Whilst im ready for any question (i think/hope) i would suspect it will contain an element of global in it. Like, not focusing on Global (with a slant on marketing) like last year, but probably focusing on ER (with a slant on global) or something like that.. I think the global topic is easier to blend in with other topics (as is management and change), thats why it is used more commonly is sample Q27/28's...
Having said that i expect the BOS will change the question dramatically from last year (as im expecting them to do for most subjects this year), so a change + ER question would be my second bet..
