So is there a real difference bewteen doing grad med at Usyd or undergrad at unsw.

I have no opinion on this... except that both produce doctors

-one is in city/redfern and one is in kensington
-time (but then this is a shit excuse)
-degree name length
-difference in contact hrs (?) [im not sure about this yet tho]

there isnt a clear difference in them yet... because courses are very homogenous.

Rather is the information and things you learn and stuff the same.

in medical school the goal is to teach you to learn for yourself.. content is about the same but its very difficult to teach u all the <insert a basic bioscience of choice>.. although u will be minimally lethal by the start of ure intern yr

Is going to one uni or the another more respected when going into the workforce.

No most states now use "Optimised Preferences System" to allocate intern places( in NSW http://www.medeserv.com.au/pmc/students/info.htm).. ure performance in the workplace will determine ure suitabililty.. not ure academic performance in school.

when u apply to specialist they will take into account ure: (no order)
-credentials
-experience
-performance in workplace reports
-recommendations

Also is it true that Unsw is mainly practical case type scenario based.

yes so is Usyd ..
its different in style Usyd uses PBL... used similarly at UMelb Flinders UAdel Newcastle UQ and UWA

another main point is that Usyd and UNSW medical degrees are both well respected..

the main difference i could imagine is your effort..

PBL... the quality of your sessions can vary quite dramatically depending on your tutor as they may go to varying lengths to "facilitate". Even though tutors are meant to only facilitate learning ie not directly teach you anything, you will definitely find that those who know more and have more practical clinical experience have far more effective tutoring styles than those with a PhD in something or rather. Unfortunately tutor quality varies infinitely, ranging (from first hand experience in the dentistry faculty which has the same PBL's as the med course) from fully qualified practicing dentists and medical practitioners to masters students hoping to get into the med degree themselves the following year. Needless to say, the latter sucks.

There are actually only about 10 provisional places, hence the 99.95 cutoff. It isn't actually 100, because most 100'ers would reject that and go either to UNSW or UMELB, and so do some of the 99.95'ers. The provisional scheme means that those 10 lucky people actually enrol in either Science (Advanced) or Med Sc, NOT the MBBS, as their undergraduate degree. They have to maintain a distinction/high distinction average (pretty high, I must say) for the length of that particular degree, then they are guaranteed a spot in the graduate MBBS program without the hassle of GAMSAT and interview.

So this 'undergrad' thing is really just a fast-track program to the graduate medicine program at USYD. There is no such thing as an undergraduate MBBS course in USYD, as such. As for graduate medicine between USYD and other unis--I have absolutely no idea.

They have to maintain an HD average (85+) throughout the course
