cause my teacher commented on my answer and he was like "how has your understanding deepened? write "I" if the question suggests it". anyways he said my answer totally avoided the question, LOL he's usually right.

hmm, well, you can still bring personal stuff in without mentioning the word I - its not that hard. and if its a speech or a feature article...or basically anything except an essay, its good technique to write in first person.

this may sound weird and im not sure how it can be done, but

can u bring the examiner into a reponse

e.g. "i know uv been sitting in a dark room and ur probabl bored as hell, so i hope my response livens up ur day a little."

after all arnt u supposed to engage ure audience

no, i wouldn't do this. There are text types...such as speeches and feature articles...where you are meant to specifically address and involve the audience. however, in these cases you will generally be given an audience (or given a scenario from which you can infer the audience). I don't think that you're meant to assume that the marker is your audience.

lol. Yes we are meant to engage the audience, but not necessarily in that way! lol. The example you gave, gave me a feeling that you lack confidence... I don't know why. Perhaps you could bring the "reader" into your response, and be postmodern.... *shrugs* I'd stay clear lol

it may even be seen as sucking up to the marker and I've heard that doesn't go down too well

I wanna read some of the responses for people who don't care. I wonder if there's an essay to the markers complaining about the crapness of this course and backing it up with the core texts and such...

Man, I'd SO do that if I didn't care...

no, just because they've asked for your understanding etc. doesnt mean that you use first person. its ust common sense - think about it, if you are required to analyse a text or texts, which is what you're doing, what else are rthey going to say - "How have these texts developed the understanding of the concept of journey of the person sitting three rows up and 2 seats to the left of you?" how ridiculous. the 'personal' aspect of your response comes through by your level of engagement with the text - basically, how you anlayse it and the meaning that you extract from it and choose to write about. Do not write a formal essay in first person. "I" should never, EVER be seen in an essay unless it is a part of a quote.
whatever, but all i know is that our teacher is a senior marker and he said if it askes about understanding, to include a person view which can be using "I have found"etc
