Hello!

I have decided to do ext 2 for my HSC and I want to use film as my medium. I have an idea for what i would like to do but i'm not sure if i can. I thought i wouldn't after reading the syllabus, yet someone said that i could.

I want to transpose a specific text (such as a chapter from a book or a short story) to video, can i do that or is it not considered original?

I was told by someone that i could do it as long as i did it as a transformation and not straight.

Help is much apperciated!

The BOS does state that you must be the writer of the piece, however with an interpretation of an existing work it becomes somewhat ambiguous as to how much is your own interprettation and how much is original. Its a bit of a grey area. Remember, it is an English subject (and a high level one at that), so you are required to do a substantial amount of your own writing.

What's best to do is use your specific text as the starting point and develop from there. Use it as inspiration for further ideas and story development. You've got plenty of time to work on it so use it and hopefully you will come up with something even better.

If you (or anyone else making a film/video for EXE2, Drama or Art) are interested, I run workshops for this kind of thing. We work on script and storyboard development, planning, casting, all aspects of shooting and editing - also assessments. I have been doing this for quite a while now and have significant experience in this field. There's a lot more information on this site about my workshops if you search around for "cblok". Goodluck, my email is writers_blok_productions@hotmail.com
