Yes, my Philosophy tute is quiet, I thought they'd be different from others. A lesson for us is just one long awkward silence punctuated by half-arsed attempts to create discussion by the tutor, myself and another or two. Are they usually like this, because I've heard (and was definitely hoping for) otherwise?

Guess it doesn't help that tute participation counts for nothing...

I tend to find that my lecturers either love me, or hate me. Love me, because I always have something insightful to say, or hate me, because my insightful comments may come into conflict with their own ideologies.

The first, first year philosophy tute I had was awful - because I made 2 comments in the first tutorial, for the rest of semester, the tutor would turn to me EVERY SIINGLE FRIKKING TUTE for the rest of semester and ask me what I thought of such and such.

No body else said anything.

Second Semester was better, and we got into some good discussions. Last semester was ok, nothing too inclined to either extreme.

This semester has been good too, except for the token outspoken weirdo in my class and the token mature age student. They have nice conversations amongst themselves.

I've put down in every single evaluation in my time at uni that a tute participation mark should be made for philosophy as most of the value derived in the course is from class discussion.

But yeah, it seems that this is *fairly* normal. I wouldn't worry too much. Is this for PHIL 1010?

Yeah it's PHIL1010 (which I totally heart btw), I usually say stuff for the sake of filling the dead silence with sound. One day however, when I didn't talk as much, the tutor pulled me aside at the end of it to make sure I didn't feel to discouraged after he 'cut me down' and kinda proved one of my points wrong. I didn't realise what had happened until he told me.

I skipped class the following week to finish something for ecop - wonder how they went while I was away...

The thing with the "cheese plate" philosophy tutes (I call them that because they are samplers) some people who say nothing in one section of the course may have heaps to say in another simply because one section doesn't interest them in the slightest but the other doesn't.

So you never know people who don't like the society component may love reason and pipe up and contribute more...

In all honesty, Philosophy is not going to get you a job - Philosophy is about the theory behind things, the abstract, and how thought is derived. Its an excellent subject to think about if you are thinking person, thinking about thinking or if you have an interest in how knowledge is formed, what is real and what isn't, or about political philosophy like democracy and utilitarianism.

In first year, you'll cover
  • Metaphysics (Reality)
  • Ethics
  • Aesthetics (Beauty)
  • Society (Politics)
  • Epistemology (Knowledge)
  • Reason (Logic)

In second year you can specialise in one of those specific fields.
