Hi I am a first year student doing Business/Commerce at Parramatta campus.
I am doing a unit called "Australia and the Global Economy". I am concerned that my tutor (whos male-Im not sure if I should mention his name) may be racist. This is due to his comments like:

* When we were on the topic of war in the middle east affecting the global economy his comments and exact words were "There always seem to be a war over there(the middle east)

* When we were talking about the settlers in colonial days settling in Australia his comments about Aborigines were "We tried to make slaves out of them but they were too stupid"

* When we were talking about the American economy he replied "Americans are f**ked anyways

Does anybody in this forum do this subject and have the same tutor and have experienced this?

Should I be concerned about his comments?

Should I be concerned about his views while he is marking my exam (seeing as though I come from another country other than Australia)?

My grades are fine in this subject, but was just wondering if there is a cause for concern to report this to the unit coordinator.

Thanks for your time.

Atticus.

how do i get out of this

it is up to you to report him, and remember that the forms that AtticusFinch has suggested, they are anonymous.
however he must be objective when marking exams/essays etc because they are not allowed to show any favouritism and also that final exams and sometimes essays are usually marked through many stages i.e. other tutors may mark it and also things may go through scaling.
ALso views of the tutor are not necesarily right so it is not assesable, its all by the textbook folr intro subjects.

hope it helps.

EDIT: are they in fact racial comments?
i mean i have this tutor and is rude to students and swears and stuff but its for the benefit for students-its humour, although you can argue its kind of a worse form of it.

So, that's true. It's called humour.

Yes, that is racist. He shouldn't have said that. Funny though.

* When we were talking about the American economy he replied "Americans are f**ked anyways

That's a great joke. If your friend said that to you you would laugh.

Reminds me of our lecturer we had for introduction to Australian indigenous studies last year. She marked me down on an assignment because I had an english heritage.

We tried to get her fired or atleast warn the course - co ordinator and the vice cancellor - but we had no grounds to appeal, even though we had written evidence on assignments.

i think that because a job at uni is pretty much a job fo rlife, its very secure (although was it UNcle or UoW that recently fired like many academics) so some complaints wont be taken as much unless its was breaking the law...e.g. the uws sex scandal. um, if that was discrimination, its illegal right? but maybe the school has less of those tourism/idigenous studies type people so they have to hold on even if they are crappy.

Theres only one indigenous teacher - thats why they couldn't fire her. Apparently the whole class filled out those evaluation forms negatively - dunno if things have changed this year. But it was fairly slack - I really don't like being called a nazi

Yes, she wrote nazi on my essay. Only because I have half english blood and it was a reflection report on what we know about aboriginals. She completely mis-interpreted my point, and wrote that I was a nazi  I hate her. I am purposely not doing any more indigenous subjects, just so I don't have to put up with her and her racist comments!

ouch, and this was consistent across the student population in that unit?
maybe i shouldnt bring up old wounds cape...but if you can avoid doing them, the better.
but its a bit, i eman alot, contradictory that the tutor called you a nazi i.e. being discriminatory while the tutor was also being discriminatory as well. maybe derive satisfaction from that.

Basically, if you were Australian or had english blood you almost failed the whole subject. If you were asian you got straight credits and distinctions.

I'm just glad that there are no more core subjects that involve indigenous studies.

Oh well, theres nothing I can really do about it now :p

It seems like he's trying to be funny. And these days, dissing America is almost as common as sneezing. The comment on Aboriginals is abit mean though.

I also do AGE @ parra and I have Jo, she's awesome, gives out chocolates/sweets everytime someone gets a question right.

This thread makes me LOL. Cape if she thinks you're a Nazi you should don the uniform and wear it with pride, if you're going to be branded one you might as well have some fun with it :D

I hate those dicks who come out from school (like you did from the closet) and go onto forums to criticise others.

sounds like its just his weird idea of humour..

i mean..yeah there is constant warring in the middle east, america is pretty screwy latelly...far as the aboriginal comment..i dunno..just sounds like a flippant remark to me

if you're really concerned, maybe talk to the Uni Counselling service or Student Association because they'll be able to advise you more on what's action if any is appropriate.

I wouldnt just go filing in forms before talking to someone who knows more about this kinda thing :)

That's not racist, that's fact. The Israel-Palestine conflict has been going on for the best part of 50 years (possibly longer) afaik.
