Ramadan isn't only about feeling empathetic to poor people. Muhammah (PBUH), didn't ever pig out at the end of the day. If you've ever fasted, you'd know that the reason you don't just give in to temptation during the day is because you know that you're asked not too. And in a way a stronger link is created, a link which surpasses human urges like "eating" and human sexual urges.Insecure Muslim said:

People with the will to fast, (even though it's a short day, and the month goes fast) end up with a stronger spiritual bond, feeling more empathetic with people who are poor (and this is further shown by the obligatory donation to those less fortunate at the end of the month), which is seperate to regular Zakat. (Which entails giving a percentage of your wages to the less fortunate.)
Most muslims though don't need more of a reason than "The Qur'an says so", but there are other reasons.
