I've conducted a search and couldn't find anything, so please enlighten me on this point. Are ranks more important or marks? It seems to me ranks are more important, but I want confirmation of this, because my ranks are a million times better than my raw marks.

For example, I got 74% in Chem trial, and ranked 19th out of 52, and a girl who got 80-something ranked 15th! A 10% (thereabouts) increment resulting in a difference of four places is just amazing (for me anyway).

Yeah, from what I've read (not much), ranks are more important than marks, and marks are kind of what they use to 'separate' those ranks. I guess what that means is, if someone only just beats you, its not as bad as them absolutely ripping you to pieces.

exactly, you'll find this matters because top 1-12 trial marks for chemistry in our year where between 91-80, then there was a few 70s, then a huge chunk of people fell between 40s-60s, it wouldnt be fair to scale someone who got 13th and they got 75 for example, to 14th and lets assume they got 60 or so, let me map it out an example

12 - 80
13 - 75
14 - 60

it wouldn't be fair to rank/align 12th and 14th as "only" 2 ranks where 1st and 2nd could only have 1% difference :uhhuh:

e.g so u mean a school A - B which is ranked bout the same has identical ranks in a subject say 15 / 40 but shool As student gets assesment mark of 80 and B gets 60
is this right so no matter what marks u get these two students are on the same boat until they do the hsc exam

i dont know hte system inside out but they do something with your rank and school rank, and the spacing between students, because 1st in School A could be only equilivantly smart to last place in james ruse ...

I think they rank your schools performance in the HSC and then compare it to the other schools in the state which decides how you as an individual will be ranked (ie. your UAI). So, the person who is ranked first is not necessarily equivalent to the person ranked first in Ruse unless your school as a whole did as well as Ruse. They use this comparison to work out how students are ranked. Knaw mean.

ur final mark for each course = the average of ur 'examination mark' and ur 'moderated school assessment'

the exam mark is simply a scaled mark out of 100 depending on the course and how u go in the hsc, has nothing 2 do with anything else

the school assessment is dependant on what marks ur skool sends in, this is where the rank comes in handy. some skools may send in the entire class of students with results over 90, if this group then doesnt perform that well in the external exam, `these marks will be shifted down to align with the average for the state with people with similar results, however, within ur skool group, u remain in the same rankings,

in other words, if u have a high ranking, what u wanna do over the coming months is not only work towards ur hsc, but teach the other students at ur school and make sure ur entire group performs well, which will bring ur skool assessment mark up,

hope it makes sense...

cheers

if u come first, then go well in hsc exam, then it doesnt matter how well ur class goes, but if u happen 2 stuff it up. but ur class goes heaps well, then ur mark will come up with it....

its dependant on the entire group really, bnot JUST the top 2 students, in ur given example...

33 student group, say the top is 75% then next is 60% down to a bottom mark of 40%...

then in the HSC exam, these students acheive a range of scaled examination marks between 60% - 95% then the school assessments will be raised by 30 each (in this example its easy when the range of both is equal)

if in the exam they got say between 70%-80% then the marks whill be knocked up and slightly condensed but the same basic ratio of the gaps will be maintained, and the rankings will be maintained....

in 2u english.. there are heaps of people on equal ranks.. so eg. rank 2 and rank 20 are separated by 1 mark.. how does this work when the marks are given after the hsc moderating / rank stealing process or whatever it is :p
