okay so i'm gonna sound like a complete dope.. but why is 0! (zero factorial) equal to 1?

Dunno really, but here's a pretty dodgy attempt to explain it:

n!/n = (n-1)!

i.e. 3!/3 = 2!, 2!/2 = 1!, 1!/1 = 0!
