Maths is the exception there ;)
Oh yeah, I forgot. Math counts but unless you're given a crappy textbook like Math in Focus then you don't really need to buy extra textbooks.

Very true, I agree with the points above, though I am not quite sure if Year 12 is any easier than Yr 11, lol.

The reason I set up such thread is to get some advice as to which textbooks (mainly Chemistry)people recommend using, because my school uses the shittiest resource, and often get people to hand write their brief, summarised notes. Teachers often miss the major points, so that's why i need an extra textbook to self study, reinforce concepts etc. Plus, we can always get second hand books for dirt cheap prices!!
Oops, I meant Yr 12 is harder.

And your reasons for getting extra textbooks seem justified. Make sure you put them to good use. :)

Our school will give us the brown maths book, with yellowish stripes on the lower half of the front cover. Is that one any good?

I've never heard of that textbook and can't vouch for it. Maybe someone else knows if it's good.

From the top of my head, these are some good math textbooks:

*Cambridge (Arnold)
*Coroneos
*Fitzpatrick
*Math in Focus (Grove) - Use thisto learn the basics if the others are too hard.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Do you know roughly how much Conquering Chemistry is?
the preliminary one...? i got for $53...

but i think a lot of schools use conquering chem anyway...

so i suggest borrowing it from the library first... and wait till you find out what your school is using... before you buy it...

I have actually spoken to some 07ers who believe that year 12 is easier.
It varies from person to person and course to course. For example, English Adv IMHO is way harder than Yr 11 while MX1 is kinda easier.

I find my Jacaranda chem books at times better than Conquering Chem. But both are still exceptionally good.

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

for chem i have :

- chemistry contexts 1 [ not sure of what edition, but it has sparks or something on the front ]
- excel prelim chem - from what i see now, ITS CRAP :)
- & conquering chem. 3rd ed.

physics:

- jacaranda physics prelim course book1
- & excel prelim physics

i got these & kiss notes from me teacher. & well, my school has a pretty bad rep. but im suprised they provided us with alright textbooks. any comments on how they are would be much appreciated.

& for that brown couchman maths book with the stripes, i have the 2u one & well, my opinion on the 2u one is that its kinda crap. Like, it doesnt go through the whole syllabus, its explanations would be like what on earth !? if i hadnt already learnt some of the stuff, & sometimes they dont even have explanations. its pretty brief & i dont recommend it as your study guide for the senior years.

Nah, but I asked my teachers what kind of books they will use before the holidays, plus you can tell waht you will be using by observing what kind of textbooks seniors carry around anyway.

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

Lol okay. I asked my teacher before the year ended - he told me he'd get back to me. Didnt happen. But then I know we're getting Conquering Chem for Chem, Heinemann or Jacaranda for Bio, and Coroneous/Fitzpatrick for 3U.

Btw, has this thread been stickied?

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

That's good, I bought one Science Excel guide a few days before the actual exam, I didn't really have much time to look at it, so i only skimmed through it... therefore only getting only Band 5 in Science. Now I have learnt my lesson of early preparation through the hard way.. =( Oh well..
