My question is simple is it possible to record (for free) a realplayer stream. My lectures are available in udio online however I don't have the time to sit at the computer and listen them so I need some way of recording them.

Ah, do a google search on "record a realplayer stream". Scores of programs to download.

As for the legality, check the host website for usage policies in the Help, FAQ, About, or Legal sections, or contact your provider of lectures. Some sources do allow recording for personal use, some do not. If you're in doubt at all, best to not record.

\edit\ misread the question

Couldn't you just get a microphone and record the sound coming out of your speakers? Although i'm not sure how good the sound quality would be, but it's worth a shot.

It would be extremely bad.

When things are encoded in the Real format it is most likely the intention of the author that it cannot be copied for offline use for copyright reasons.

Well in this case it is lectures that my gf was told by Disability Services (she can't write at the moment) that she should d/l and listen to on her ipod...

As an update for anyone who's interested:

Applians RM Recorder will record realplayer streams, however it needs 'activating' to record more than 4mins or 5mb.

Boilsofts RM to Mp3 Converter will convert recorded rm streams to Mp3 so they can be listened to on an ipod. It also needs 'activating' to convert whole files.

Because I probably should plug them abit:

Applian produces a whole suite of programs for recording wmp streams, realplayer streams and scheduled recording of both. It is fast and intuitive. My only complaint is that it can not be accelerated in that it will take as long as the clip is to record it.

Boilsoft also makes an RM converter which will convert recorder real player videos to other formats. Both programs are quick and easy to use and both support batch conversions.

I havn't tried though I believe that RM Recorder would probably do it, or that something in the same suite of programs would.

You would have to find a RM>AVI, etc converter yourself though as I don't know any off the top of my head.
