Ok guys could someone answer these questions for me :/

Iam interested in doing 4U this year..today i found out that i placed 21st in the school (out of like 60th)..but they only accept top 20. Funny thing is..last term the teacher said it would be top 20 then if they drop down it would be top 25 or something. So far about 3 people have dropped out so that should make me elligible to apply. However after talking to my head teacher twice he wont let me in because he says according ot my marks ia mnot good enough. However, yesterday i found out that in my yearly paper i was marked down about 2 mark, equivilant of about 4-5%..and i think this should jack my marks up higher to 20th place of 19th. But he wont change the marks for some reason..he doesnt even want to talk to the teachers about it.

Is there anything i can do to get it..as first lesson was today he wouldnt let me join so next lesson is sometime next week and if i dont get into that i dont think i will be doing it. Is there an appeal process? Does he have the right to say i cant do it etc? I've talked to my parent about it, they're not happy either so i was wondering whats the best course of action.

Get your parents to go to the school and talk with them.

Or do it via some other way

Would that work?? My parents cant talk english very well can i bring my sister along as an interpreter..also you can appeal on the groudn that his decisions are unfair etc? But he is the head teacher so i doubt i can get it..i am going to talk to my teacher and the head teacher again tomorrow. If they still dont let i think i will ask my parent to talk to the mabout it.

Hahahaha I was in the same position last year although my coordinator changed his mind.

If your really keen, then beg for him to let you try and see how well you do in the 1st 3 and 4 unit assessments.

He wont even let me try..heck he doesnt even want to talk about it..despite me being 'technically' allowed to join. He goes on about how theres a lot of pressure..last time he let someone do 4U they spent 2 much time on it and failed UAI....he reckons my marks are 2 shit..etc

I reckon this is unfair. Who can i complain about this to? How did you change make your coordinator change his mind? Also how did you end up going in 4U?

Write a formal letter of complaint and get your parents to sign it, then hand it to the principal. He does not have the right to disallow you to study it.

well unless the class is full or something.. I think they can reject students on teh ground that there's not enough resources or something..

But 3'ish ppl did drop out...so there should be space. Lodge a formal appeal to your principal, if that still doesn't work out...and I don't see why it shouldn't, appeal to BOS.

Argue with them.. press them for the reason of not letting you in.. Their answer will invariably be that it's for your own good blah blah.. but then you assert that you know what's best for you... Tell them you intend to study something technical afer university, that you believe you like it etc etc.

If they come up with something along the lines that it's bad for your UAI, tell them you care about your UAI, but you are more concerned about learning and not playing the system for UAI.

And if they answer you with some crap about that it is school policy then argue that there will only be a minimal burden for the school to include an additional student in a class that is not full (the maximum allowed size of a class is 26 I think.)

I don't think they can win the argument.

Well, it seems like this:

if you joined his class, his not going to like you very much.

Thanks a lot guys..it really makes me feel better.

I have talked to friends and family. My good firned (goes to North Sydney Boys) rekon i should be able to get in if i explain my situation clearly (as last encounter he didnt let me talk my side of the story). I am going to ask him to spend a lunchtime with me..and iam going to ask him to let me in. I will elt him know that this is my decision etc

Regarding the formal complaint..how do i 'fill one in'..iam pessimistic about this..appealing to the board of studies?? do you mean i ring them up etc...but by then it will be 2 late 2 join.

Also hosuemouse..the head teacher doesnt exactly teach the 4U class.

Also next 4U class starts on Wednesday..i want to confirm it by tomorrow as i need to pay for coaching for 4U/3U..

If you think it may take a week or two to sort it out I would suggest you get a copy of the textbook and find out what topic is being covered so you are up to date when you join.

Yeh i'll be doing that..might as wel lbuy the books anyway.

Also just to let you guys know..i have a very bad 'persuding skill'..

aslo last time i asked him it was in a bad time + with some other people..so i guess he rekons we didnt take the subject serious enough. I am going to talk to him properly tomorrow, if he doesnt let..i will ask my parent to come to school and talk to the principal, if the principal sides with the head teacher i will call the BOS about it.

Wish me luck :)

hmmm im sure teachers cannot actually bar you from joining unless of course class is full or those reasons. also the "wont cope with pressure" etc argument is weak. you can just argue back that you do not know how i will do in the subject and marks do not necessarily mean how well im at maths. so what i advice is yes talk to your head teacher again. if he wont hear you out then talk to your principal. it is better to talk to them first before bringing up a formal complaint. your principal should listen to you and shouldnt be opinionated. if that still doesnt work like head teacher doesnt listen to principal or somfin write a formal letter of complaint to both your principal and board of studies (same letter just addressed to different people) outlining the situation briefly. put in the data (like how you were ranked 21st) and then how you would like to try the course at the very least and finally say that your head math teacher has not allowed you at all to study it. just make sure if you do that you keep it polite and factual rather than opinionated

How mean of them. Surely they can't actually disallow you from doing a subject you want :S Best of luck davidw89 :)

And I can't understand how x2+1=0 ... x must be equal to -1, but a squared nubmer is always positive ... wtf ?
Unless you're being sarcastic, x equals +/- i where they define i2 = -1. Squares are only positive if they are squares of real numbers
