.... Unless you're being sarcastic, x equals +/- i where they define i2 = -1. Squares are only positive if they are squares of real numbers
So you either know this or you are in Extension 2 now ?

How did he know to post it on the 4 unit thread... hmmm.... I detect sarcasm.
Both of you kids, a classmate has joined Extension 2, upon his first lesson he learnt "Complex Numbers" and told me about x2+1=0, refusing to provide a proof I have resorted to asking here.

I talked to him today. He was in a way fair..we sat down in an empty classroom and talked. Basically he is going to allow me to do it for this term (after much explaining and reasoning by me lol). Then he will ultimately decide whether i should continue to do it for next year (based on my 2u/3u/4u mark). When i said he was 'unfair' he kinda accepted it but told me this isnt about being fair or not fair :p. So yeh ended up getting the 4U curve sketching hw..gonna start today..next lesson on Wednesday (hope i dont bomb out)..and yeh coaching tomorrow for 4U as well.

Thanks a lot for the help guys

There's no proof as to why the square root of -1 is i. Its just defined that way.

That's great to hear david :D Good luck in your studies! :)

Oh yeah. The ultimate proof: by definition, it is trivial (the word replacing "obvious" since they don't like it in proofs) :D

Its not a proof. Its just more about convience rather than writing sqrt(-1) everytime. I know that in engineering (or physics) they use j rather than i.

Are you talking about next year as in January? Or as in after your HSC, as in year 2008? If the former then it should be counted as any other course should, but it would be advised to do it within the school as you can ask for help anytime

But, if you mean studying it in 2008, then:

If you have at least 10 units now not including the 4 unit maths you want to do, then the 4u maths course next year, I don't think will be counted as you already have 10 units which is illegible for a uai. Why not try doing the 4u maths now so even if you stuff up you can still drop down if you're feeling uncomfortable.

If you want to do it next year, then it would be probably done as a leisure course more than anything. In university you will learn the maths you learn in high school including some 4u maths.

I'm talking about 2007.
How my UAI will be counted then because I will do 2U+3U at school and 4U at TAFE?

Well you'll have to tell your school I'm pretty sure, so that they can report it to the BoS and the related. But honestly I think it would be more beneficial to do it at school rather than outside education, and I think your school would advise that as well.

Regarding how it will be counted, if your school knows about it I think it'll be counted in the uai how it normally should that is, 2 units of Ext 1 maths and 2 units of Ext 2 maths
