Well firstly my computer has been plagued with horrible pop-up ads which come up like everytime I go to any website.

Using full system scans via Norton Internet Security and Windows Defender (worth a try), they came up with nothing.

So I did one of those online virus/spyware scans which picked up a random exe in 'Documents and Settings', file deletion does nothing as it says "the program is currently being used by a person/application.. blah blah".

Any suggestions on how I would remove this - highly recommended spyware removal programs that you have come across and are not as incompetent as NIS07 and Win Defender?

Give Adaware a go first and see how that goes.

Hmm.. It found some tracking cookies.

Don't know if that did it or not though - good thing is I'm not getting any more popups anymore (well now..)

Cheers sunny.

Try Adaware, and then even if it works, still install Spybot S&D afterwards and run it as well.
