The film's acclaim has come from its techincal qualities (editing style, superb acting, cinematography etc.) rather than the story or the characters.

that movie is disturbing...it's good though. The scene where h is injecting himself in him infected arm is so terribly shocking....aaarg, makes me sick thinking about it *she says as she rubs her arm*

Movie was not based on drugs but rather general "addicton" and how no addiction ever has any positive effect.
