Nitrate : Polyatomic anion of nitrogen and oxygen (NO3-1). Nitrates are oxidising agents and they exist as several interesting compounds. Ammonium nitrate is used time and time again to kill people cheaply and effectively (if confused, read more news!) as well as a fertiliser. Saltpeter (KNO3) is also a fertiliser and is the active ingredient in gunpowder.

the carbon dioxide experiment is exothermic - hence heating soft drink causes CO2 to move into its gaseous form, reducing the acidity and thus is 'sharp' taste.

Cooling has the opposite effect.

Has 4 equilibrium equations

CO2 (g) <> CO2(aq)

CO2 + H2O <> H2CO3

H2CO3 (aq) <> HCO3- + H3O+

HCO3 - (aq) <> CO3 2- + H3O +

Polyethene Common name is polyethylene, is a polymer created from repeating ethene monomers. Is produced in two forms in the petrochemical industry to be used as plastics, HDPE and LDPE.

LDPE due to increased branching forms a softer, more flexible plastic used in items such as plastic shopping bags is polymerised under high pressures. HDPE, however, is polymerised under lower pressures, which limits branching, forming straight chains leading to a harder, more rigid plastic used in item such as plastic toys.

Equilibrium: When a system is in equilibrium, the following properties remain the same:
- macroscopic properties
- temperature
- pressure
- concentration of reactants and products (but not necessarily equal)

Monoprotic Acid: An acid which contains only one hydrogen atom that can be ionised in an acid-base reaction. Therefore, one mole of a monoprotic acid will lend one mole of hydrogen ions when in an acid base reaction. Examples of these are HCl and CH3COOH.
