If you like progressive rock try :

Evergrey
Porcupine Tree (You'd probably like their latest album, In Absentia)
Tiamat (You'd probably like their newer releases like Judas Christ)
My Dying Bride (Especially if you like Kyuss)

and Anathema..

The first two bands especially, are excellent prog. rock/rock acts. :)

Oh and some other suggestions

Bands like In Flames : Gardenian, Darkane, Samael

Bands like A Perfect Circle : Green Carnation, Winds (which is much better, since it has HELLHAMMER IN IT! If you know of hellhammer anyway :p) and Virgin Black (whom are incidentally Aussies)

Just wanted to add "Children Of Bodom" to that list of "Bands like In Flames"

Who just own In Flames in every single way imaginable.

Meanwhile I've been listening to a lot of Lacuna Coil, Killswitch Engage, Nightwish and Chimaira lately...

Porcupine Tree are fantastic, lay down in the dark on the floor with in absentia on surround sound. I dare you.

Just for the record, in my post above, I thought the thread author was referrring soley to fairly general rock bands.
