...and in the sixteen years of the Menzies government, they didn't introduce internet filtering either!

The government had no clue about the internet until, probably, about 2002. And in 2005 62 MPs asked for ISP-level filtering. It's not like these ideas sprung forth from the loins of Karl Marx himself. Social conservatives who dominate seeming dominate the Liberals now would savour the thought of internet filtering.
2002 - 2007 is still five years in which they could have implemented such a policy but didn't.

On the other hand lol at WAF. It is another of his feeble attemps to link the labor party with communism. Internet filtering is a policy based on conservative social values shared by Labor and Liberal. He continues to apply his usual false left-right dichomtomy.

If any draconian social policy makes a group commies then the libs are commies for introducing such harsh, intrusive anti-terror laws.

jb_nc: The Liberal party's record w.r.t. civil liberties is anything but brilliant and I'd be the first to concede that, however I think you're being a bit harsh on them in this instance.

Dom: The comment about importing policy from China was mostly for the lulz, given his obvious links to it and that China's the country most famous for fucking with the internet.

I dunno. I just saw it front page of the Courier Mail a couple of days ago and spacked it, though it didn't appear in The Australian or anywhere else to my knowledge. Let's just hope it doesn't :)

But Mr Conroy has been unmoved by their arguments.

The minister stressed that if people equated freedom of speech with watching child pornography then he would always disagree with them.
This man is a fucking moron.

General pornography != child pornography.

Is there really the technological capability to do this? Anyone have a paper which outlines how exactly the filter works? For all we know it might just block well known pornographic websites.

Yeah, he's going to need someone knowledgable in the Labor Party to translate that for him.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Yeah, we've finally done it Australia. We've voted in someone stupider than Helen Coonan.
Agree or disagree with her on policy, Coonan was a highly successful barrister before entering parliament. The only experience Conroy has is as a TWU official and head warlord of the Victorian Right...

My worry is truly that once they have the capability to filter something on the internet, where will they stop? 'Terrorist' websites? Hackers? Political dissidents? From reading your post it seems they probably can't do what they hope to do effectively against computer-savvy users, so that's a relief.

With the function of the upper house being to review law (and her role as communications minister to create law), I'd say a background as a barrister is definately handy.

... just like I did.

"Mr Conroy,

I read today on the BBC's news online service that regarding the apparent nebulous nature of an opt-out filtering system: "The minister stressed that if people equated freedom of speech with watching child pornography then he would always disagree with them. " I wonder were you also stressed to make such a disingenuous logical fallacy in the argument supporting this abhorrent legislative mistake, or are you naturally talented at such a manner of malfeasant equivalence? Are you also aware that Child Pornography is illegal under Australian law or are you as misinformed on that issue as you are on the feasibility of implementing this moronic reactionary filtering system? What industry bodies/individuals have you consulted regarding this issue? I'm sure you'll find that it's utterly impossible to implement without significant cost and performance impacts on existing services.

I hope you understand that this moronic legislation rings a death knell for the competitiveness of current and up and coming ISP's in Australia, and sets us back even further than the unfathomably foolish decisions of Helen Coonan.

Further, I'd like to know what actual network/communications experience you have that justifies you receiving this portfolio?

I strongly, strongly urge you to look into the feasibility of the implementation of this system before you make grand sweeping statements about the technology. You're supposed to undo the idiocies of Coonan, not make Alston look like a technological wunderkind.

Sincerely Yours,

Daniel Nolan"
Hahaha, brilliant.

Viewing general pornography is a gateway to sicker things. I looked at some pictures of girls in bikinis last year, now im a baby molesting serial killer.
