How do they vary for different materials, quality and situations?
i cant find much on the Internet or in the Text Book its Generally only the equations for FoS... can anyone reccomend a good book or site or give me some advice.
Im ment to write a page report on safety factors in engineering.

there r 2 fos formulas u need to know
one for brittle materials and the otha for ductile maretials
(they r both REALLI similar)
....kinda simple realli... emmm...i dunno n e books.....evn tho i got all-_-....o well, goodluck!:)

For brittle materials:
FoS = UTS/load that will be applied to structure

for ductile:
FoS = yield stress/load that will be applied to structure.

pretty easy really.

Also take note when doing stress problems. When you want to apply a given safety factor to a material with the stress given, DIVIDE that value by the safety factor. But if you are given a force the MULTIPLY by that safety factor too incorporate it into the problem. i.e. to work out a diameter required, Max force able to take or stress

Common sense never fails with these. If you are adding a safety factor, you wouldnt make the diameter of a cable smaller would you? ;)
